Converted '49 front mount distributor over using the info from this site--including Dell's secret 1/2 ohm resistors. Idled just fine, but ran rough and backfired at higher rpms.
Had repainted everything, so I figured the carb got some dirt in it. Tore it apart and checked it twice. No luck.
New points and condensor--old ones were ready for file "x". Again, no luck.
Put the old 6 volt coil back on--with a "jumper" wire--ballast resistors in line--ran like a top.
Figured it had to be a bad coil. Tried another 12 volt coil. (Would just as soon keep it all 12 volt.) No luck.
What the hell??
Just started to put the old 6 volt coil back on when I noticed the spring-loaded front contact on the bottom of the coil that mates up with the distributor cap looked different than the 12.
Sure as s____, both of the contacts on the 12 volt coils were bent. Must have bent them when I was putting them in. Re-bent them to line up with the metal contact on the distributor contact and carefully put the coil in--with a flashlight to make sure I didn't bend it again--and she runs like she's supposed to.
Hope this helps someone else.

Dell said: "under the coil springy-thingy."

Finally, some technical terms I can understand! Thanks, Dell!
