I could not start my 1949 8N, front mount distributor, so I removed the distributor and found that the rotor rivet was very loose, 3/8" play. The distributor cap was worn also. I replaced the points, rotor, condensor, and the coil(since I had it apart). Everything went great. I replaced the distributor and coil. I was postive that I had the tang lined up with the slot on the engine. It felt like it just slipped in, perfect . I turned on the ignition, and ruined the distributor, it must not have been aligned!!. I vaccumed up the pieces on the engine side. Question #1- Is there a good way to tell that I have lined it up correct before I turn on the ignition?? Question #2- There is a Ford, New Holland dealership within 3 miles, should I buy it there, will it be better than a after market?? The dealership burned down 1 year ago, so they might not have it in stock. Or is the after market better? I am going to buy the complete distributor and put the new coil on it. Thanks in advance, I will let you know the outcome, Jerry, Redbarns

I ordered a distributor from this site last night. Now that I have some good tips from you guys, I will know how to install it right. I did notice that the old distributor had some wear in the bushings, so it needed some work done to it anyway. I will let you know if it all comes together alright, and the main thing is if it starts so I can mow the pasture. Thanks, Redbarns

I installed the new distributor, this time I turned the rotor to lock it in place with the engine. It worked great. It started up faster than it has in 10 years. I guess the rotor was getting looser all the time. Now it runs great. Thanks for all the help guys, Redbarns

Do as Dachshund said. I usually just get my two bolts started that hold the distributor on then rotate the rotor till it falls in place. You will se avsolutely no gap between the base of the distributor and the front of the surface on the engine. It can fool you. I usually check myself at least twice to be sure. I'd try to stay away from Tisco distributors. I bought the third one before I got a good one. First one was so stiff in the bushings you could not turn it by hand. Something was not lined up or put together right. The second had problems inside. The counterweights were dragging inside the case and the third problem was minor but showed a lack of quality control. The clips that hold the dist. cap on were so out of adjustment they would not even holfd the cap in place. I took it to the dealer and let them do the bending on the spring clips(in case it broke)..It is running now and is O.K. I bought another good spare on ebay. Of course this is a gamble...
