Need help with 8N in OKC area

We purchased a 1952 8N recently and have already had it worked on twice! Last trip, it needed a new coil which seemed to have solved the problem until we used it to brush hog for about 4 hours and now it is having the same problem as before. Starts but starts surging and dies within minutes.

We put on a new coil but it still starts, surges, dies within minutes.

Can anyone suggest someone in Oklahoma City (or surrounding area) to work on an 8N?

Allen_Susan..... ...ain'chur carb, surging is almost always yer governor NOT an ignition problem. Governors aren't rocket science, infact rocket engines fuel pumps have governors.

Unfortunately, governors do wear, but replacement parts Basic repair kit about $50, replacement governor $250 (not cheap).

Me? I'd disconnect the spring-loaded governor rod (it eazy to un-clip, look) to the carburator shaft and starter to make certain its NOT SPARKIES. A warm engine should start at idle. Iff'n you can gittchur engine to start and stay running we're ready for the simple governor check.

Engine OFF, reconnect yer governor rod clippy. Now start yer engine. While standing on the ground, with dashboard throttle lever at about 1/2, grabb yer carb throttle rod with yer hand (it won't byte you) and "JAZZ" yer engine for more speed. Does it fight yer hand? Hard? you can OVERCOME all governor corrections with yer hand (don't be scared) Iff'n governor don't fight yer hand-jazz or is weak, good bet yer governor needs rebuilding..... ....HTH, Dell

I agree it sounds like a fuel problem. maybe trash in the tank or line or carb problem. If you don't get it fixed by next week let me know and I will swing by labor day weekend and maybe we can get it going.I evan have a carb on the shelf we could put on and see if that fixed the problem. I need the carb but we could use it for a test. I really think you are loosing fuel flow. I wish you coul pull the line real fast when it dies to see if fuel is flowing to the carb like it should.
or pull the screw out of the bottom of the carb when it dies to see if it is empty. Hope this helps just trying to save you $65 to $90 bucks an hour.

Central Ford New Holland on I40 in OKC has worked on mine a time or two and as I remember, they did decent work and didn't seem too high $$$.

Sounds like you may have some carb problems. First thing you need to do is get an I-T manual FO-04 which will tell you how to fix things your self. These old tractors where made so the farmer could do most if not all the work on them. I'll bet if you ask around you will find some one in your area that can/will work on that tractor for you but it will cost you. Most places in my area charge $60 plus and hour to work on tractors.

If you can operate a PC, chances are you can fix it yourself. We can help. First off, is this a 6v tractor or 12v? If you don't know, look at the top of the battery & tell us how many caps it has. If it is a 6v, the coil is not likely to be the problem. If it's 12v, that means someone has converted it from 6v to 12v, so it could be wired wrong & causing the coil to burn out.
