I have a 52 8N which has run great for the last 4-5 years. Tonight I was mowing the yard, and all of a sudden it started smoking a lot! Smoke is a sort of white/grey color and was coming from the exhaust.

I quickly got the tractor up to the house and shut it off. It sounded like the radiator was boiling, as it was making a sound like boiling water.

After it sat for a couple of minutes, I noticed something leaking from around the manifold to exhaust clamp. It smelled like radiator coolant.

Before I start taking things apart, do you guys have any ideas/suggestions as to what I should look for?

Also, is this something a guy (me) with average mechanical skill could fix?

Thanks for all your help!

Paul

Probably blew a head gasket, or cracked the head but most likely just the gasket. If you don't have one you need to get an FO-04 I-T manual so you will have an idea of how to fix the problem

Sounds like the head gasket has failed. The boiling in the radiator is compression gasses escaping into the coolant and the coolant in the exhaust causes white or gray smoke.

Get a manual and it will explain how to change gaskets. You will want to check head for cracks and block also.

You have to take the hood off but pretty straight forward from there. Critical part is re-assembly to include thoroughly cleaning of all parts and torquing of head bolts and in the proper sequence.

Good Luck,
