I have been looking for the past few days for a 5/8 inch by 1 inch 18 pitch bolt, but can't seem to find one. I had to replace the crank when I was rebuilding and it seems that the bolt hole is about 2 1/8 in. deep, and threads dont start for about 3/8 of an inch from front of pulley. I saw on other disscusions here that anything longer then 1 in. will bottom out. Do any of you think that having an aftermarket crank is the reason why I have a 2 1/8 in. deep bolt hole? Any ideas on finding a bolt here in Texas, about 25 miles NW of Houston would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, RayinTomball

Have you tried the harmonic balancer bolt for a Ford 289/302/5.0 in it yet? That has the same thread and is grade 8.

In this case it is not a lot of help unless you want to buy 25, but sometimes a good source for oddball stuff, including taps and things is McMaster Carr. Shipping is reasonable and they usually get your order to you if not the next day, within two days. It is an interesting place that carries just about anything, albeit sometimes, but not all, you have to buy in quantity. Worth tucking into the back of your mind.

Also, look in the yellow pages for a local industrial fastener supply house. Usually in larger cities there are a couple that furnish fasteners to industry. Yellow pages list them under either fasteners or bolts. Most places will sell individual units. I have kept one in SW Detroit in business over the years - especially when you get into metric stuff.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Ray..... ....you say yer just 25mi from Houston and you can find a 5/8-18x1" SAE national-fine grade-8 bolt? Are you scared of going into the big city? While yer local mom&pop hardware store probably won't have that bigga size bolt, I can't believe you can't find it in Houston. Look in yer yellowpages for petes sake..... ...respectfully, Dell

If you do cut one down ( good idea in lieu of anything else ).. buy a nut for it.. thread the nut on.. then cut off, then remove nut to chase the threads.. Try to file that first leading thread down so it doesn't fold or curl and make starting the thread a real pain..

Ray...I ended up buying a longer 5/8"-18 cap screw & cutting it down w/ a grinder.
