You also will need to remove the timing cover no matter witch seal you use, inspect the crank pulley for ware. there are 2 different style aftermarket crank pulleys so ask witch one izz best for you application if it comes to that. I have some info in a web site I am werk段n on.

I'm not qualified to contribute (Though I hope my knowledge and experience will grow enough that I can contribute on a greater level someday.), but I've already got your site bookmarked in my N resource list. I wonder if some of Dawn's photos from Arthur would be instructive in terms of things to look for when taking things apart.

First, is the front pulley loose?

I think the pulley bolt is supposed to be torqued to something like 150-ft.lbs. and the front seal actually seals on the back of the pulley. The quick/cheap fix is to make sure the crank bolt is tight and the pulley is not loose.

But, once it starts leaking, it is usually too late. The loose pulley will quickly wear out the rope or newer/better neoprene seal.

If you need to replace the front seal you DO NOT have to drop the crank. You just take the front axle stuff off, disconnect the tie rod/drag link on one side and swing the assembly out of the way so you can drop the pan. Make sure you have the transmission safely supported cause it will try to fall over on you!!! Then, remove the pan. Careful, it is cast iron and heavy!! The new seal should be fairly easy to slide in around the crank. I think the front seal actually seals on the pulley, so that may also need to be replaced if it has been run loose.

Yes, use the neoprene seal, I just had a bad experience with the rope seal, and Im hoping the neoprene works better. Thanks for the tip Dan.
