elec system leak

I have a 2n with a leak in the wiring somewhere. I have replaced just about every component in the system and yet the battery still drains. I did polarize the system as per Dell's instructions.Someone on this site suggested that I disconnect one wire at a time until the problem is isolated. I did that and it seems that the new light switch is the culprit. However, when I put a continuity tester on it it shows current when the switch is closed, as it should, and no current when the switch is open, also as a good switch should. My question is can there be a leak small enough that a continuity tester will not detect and enough that a battery will discharge in a couple of days? Also how many times can you let a battery completly discharge until the battery is junk? I hate being the kind of mechanic that solves problems by replacing parts until I find the bad one! Is there a electrical systems for dummies book out there? TIA

I have had to replace my voltage cutout twice now. Both times I found it was allowing my battery to 'discharge' when I would turn off the ignition switch. The only way I happened to figure it out was I saw the ammeter swing to the discharge side when I turned off the key. Then when I tapped on the cutoout with my finger the ammeter swung back to 'zero'.

These things are a mystery to me as far as how they work. I decided to just replace the part instead of trying to open them up to see if they can be repaired.

That is what I have run into, maybe its whats going on with yours too.

I should have also added that you need to get more proficient with your vom skills. You don't us ethe continuity function to check for current..etc. The better yuo explain what you are doing.. the better we can help you.

Check that light switch with both wires disconnected from it and put one lead of your tester on ground and then check each terminal with the other lead. The switch may have an internal leak to ground. Bobs method should also show up any leak to ground. (woops 6 volt positive ground and here I am talking about ground - I am refering to chassis ground not battery negative)

ground and negative have nothing to do with each other... Ground is a reference point.. negative is a polarity..

Ground is polarity sensitive by application.

Yep - you know that and I know that but this positive ground just confuses the ** out of some. Just trying to make sure he checked to the frame rather than battery negative as some might interpet it.

That should be high school level stuff.. but I pretty sure they aren't teaching anything usefull these days in school. My wife is a teacher.. and all the administrators care about is 'F-CAT' testing.. the rest of the ciriculem takes a back seat to that..

How old is the battery?

the battery is nearly new but it has discharged maybe 8-10 times. Also this is still a 6 volt system.

As Denny says, it may be the battery.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and leaving it sit a couple of days to see if the battery will go dead on it's own?

Otherwise, remove ONE of the battery cables, and connect a test light with a very low wattage bulb in it between the disconnected cable, and the battery post.

If the is even a very small current draw, the bulb should at least glow weakly. If it does, disconnect electrical accessories until the test light goes out, indicating the "leaky" component.
