Its a safe practice to use the same terminal on ground of the boosting battery as the tractor's
battery since you could have other items connected
to the same circuit as the starter which would stand the voltage but not the reverse polarity.
Older tractors might be OK but if you had a radio
on the same circuit and polarity was reversed,
you might not fair too well. There are some modified wiring harnesses out there and its always
better to be safe and consistent with DC circuits.

The connection of the starter is only live when one starts the engine. If one had a radio attached to this point, it would only play while starting the engine. That goes for anything else that one would connect to this point.

Yes, but it is not done in the traditional sense, where you would connect battery to battery. Here we ensure that the tractor is in neutral since we are bypassing the safety feature of the transmission starter switch. Connect either side of the donor battery to a good ground on the tractor. Touch the other side to the starter teminal (The one that goes into the starter)Polarity is no concern here. The ignition key must be on and the old battery must have sufficient charge to operate the ignition system. In this manner the 12 volts is isolated from the 6 volts by the starter relay in the case of the 8N or the starter switch on 2N/9N....

Do not jumper thru the 6v battery. Take the negative jumper from the 12v. negative post and hook it somewhere on the tractor frame as the ground. Turn the ignition on, and with the tractor in neutral and the clutch blocked down, touch the starter battery cable connection with the positive jumper from the 12v., and will spin. Note: you have to have at least enough juice in the 6v to generate a spark, and be careful, because you are by-passing the starter switch and trans lockout. My $.02
