After spending the day testing ballast resistors I sat on my deck that overlooks the pond which is 30 yards away, with a rum & coke, and watched a pair of blue herons land & eat frogs. They are such graceful birds, very wary, and spend a long period motionless before trusting their surrounding.

I dug (deepened by 12 feet) my pond 3 years ago and the aqua-life has come back. Frogs, bull-Rushes, Muskrats and now Blue Herons.

Life Is Good.

BTW: I will post the Ballast data after I decipher my notes.

Around here, people tend to shoot those pesky Blue Herons and Egrets so they won't kill all the fish in the pond. I've watched them grab fish out of the water and then just leave them on the bank to die because they were to big to eat. I'm sure glad they don't live here, just migrate through. Sounds like you enjoy them, though! Everyone has thier likes/dislikes.

I can't have fish because the pond freezes to
18" ice thickness with snow cover and fish die.
Everyone here removes their fish and stores them in tanks for the winter and I don't intend on taking fish to Arizona.

Yes! Heron, Egrets bother the pond fish here but they don't shoot them. I guess you could get those Propane shotguns they use to scare ducks & geese from crops but then what's a few fish for nature.

Regards,

The blue heron is a protected species!!! in reply to Dachshund, 08-26-2006 07:59:52
I'd certainly like to catch your sorry neighbors killing them. The little blue heron is protected by the Illinois Endangered Species Act as of 1977 *01*. It is also protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 ...

Take a look at:

SHHHH! Ain't ever shot one myself, but know plenty of people who have, including a game warden. None of them seemed too worried that it was on an "endangered" list. I've seen a couple on my place in the past 3-4 years, but I don't have a pond that interests them. People on the east coast look at them in a different way, but around here, they are just another pest.

That "game warden" should be unemployed, in jail, and with a nice fine to pay off if he's been violating the laws he's sworn to uphold.

Oh well! To each his own! Why lock him up, where he is a burden on society, when he could be out there ridding the world of those pesky Blue Herons? 8^)
Anyhoo - we ain't gonna agree on this one so we might as well quit fighting over it!

Last year I got a little carried away with the roundup killing cattails and other unwanted plants on the beach etc. This year I have no plants and the water quality is more like a muddy green milkshake. I am going to try barly bales and more planting of natives to return it to its crystal clear quality. The fish and turtles haven't seem to mind. Sometimes I take a step back for every two steps forward. Enjoy
