I'm trying to remove my starter and have disconnected the wiring and removed the 2 long bolts. I expected the starter to slide out, but the housing "A" is loose and slides about 1.5 inches until it hits the bolt on the engine, but the armature/bendix "B" is still attached to the tractor. Can anyone tell me what the procedure should be? Should I remove the housing completely first, then pull out the armature? Is the piece labeled "C" part of the armature and does it come off to? Should A, B and C all come out together?

Too late now but you should never have taken the long bolts out. If you can, which you probably can't now, put the long bolts back in and screw them into part Cabout half way into part C because it is the end plate of the starterand should come off with the starter, otherwise your starter will have to be reassembled (not easy for inexperienced like me and you). If you can't get the long bolts back in just tap part C loose from the housing and remove it with the starter apart. I would suggest strongly that you get yourself a I&T Manual FO-4 if this is a 9N, 2N or 8N tractor. Otherwise you need some good help.

1st off, thanks so much for the advise! Well, I tried to tap, pound and chisle at the part C from the trans and it won"t budge! I did manage to rotate it slightly (about a quarter or half inch) by tapping the alignment tab on the top towards the engine. Are there any other bolts/screws to take out? There is one slotted screw on transmission body (about an inch past the right of my photo.) I didn"t take that out. Any more ideas are greatly appreciated!

Bruce is right on. Disconnect the starter solenoid and battery. You may have to pull the brushes out put the shaft back in then put the brushes back in.

First off, put the bolts back in the starter & about 3 or 4 turns into the block.. Then, get a chisel to pop "part c" off of the block. Then, unscrew the bolts out of the block & put nuts on them. Otherwise, the starter comes apart. Not fatal, but not fun either. Then, loosen the two bolts holding the oil filter canister to the block, remove the dipstick, and keep the starter close to the block while pushing the front of it down. The bendix is behind the flywheel; your job is to get it over the flywheel. It will come out!
