Hello guys, I was wondering if any1 here has a parts drawing of the sherman step down or maybe internal specs on both the step up and step down. The reason I ask is because I read somewhere that the step up and the step down use the same case, then I started thinking (maybe wishful thinking) hey, maybe its possible to turn my step up sherman into a more usefull step down trans...

has any1 ever looked into this? I would love to have a sherman step up/down trans but all I have is the step up. I do alot of heavy pulling so the step down would help me alot more than the step up....

thanks

-Leo-

Well I am not opposed to machine work. I have an entire machine shop to work with, but just how much is involved?

And I do understand that the unit is small, but why should it be big? its either strait though or low...

Sherman issued a service bulliten in the early 50's regarding the step conversions. Unfortunately, NONE of the required parts are available and the machine work I had to have done to accomplish the conversion on the one I tried costs more than a Combination. It IS possible but, I'd sell you a Combo cheaper.

Also, as sounder said, be careful about abusing your Shermans guys and gals. Parts ARE getting harder to find everyday and downtime isn't getting any easier to afford either.

I put a Sherman Combo in my 49-8N and the low-range gears are where I stay most of the time. This definitely solved the "first gear too fast" issues I had when grading the driveway. The added torque for stump pulling is also a plus. Things happen a lot slower in Low-Range, First-Gear and it seems like the tractor has a lot more USABLE horespower without having to ride the clutch.

Just remember that all of that stump pulling power is going thru a handfull of gears that will fit in a sandwhich baggy...

Keep in mind that the transmission doesn't magically 'make any power'.. it only changes ground speed.

A step down doesn't turn your tractor into a 27hp stump puller..

yup, less ground speed at the same engine RPM, OR more RPM and the same ground speed.... and their is more power at a higher RPM... anything helps...
