when welding cracks the most important thing is to drill a small hole at each end of the crack I like to use a 3/16 hole, weld only about 3/4 to 1 inch at a time, stop and peen until it cools to the point you can hold your hand on it,then weld some more, and repeat,,repeat. if you grind a "V" and weld carefully, you flux and cover with lead and use a air driven peening or flux hammer and the weld will not show(under the paint)

My '41 9N came from the factory, as was common during the WAR years, with the block welded (brazed). She just weeps a little when it is cold, but, it stops when the coolant starts warming up the block.

I thought about doing some sorta repair, but, I have decided to let it be.

My 48 8N trailer queen has a nasty braze line on the side of the block that weeps when it is cold outside and the engine gets hot. I showed it to my FIL last night and he said he has a guy next to his shop (in Ft. Worth) that is very good at brazing cast iron. I asked about welding, and he told me since it has already been brazed you can not weld it unless you get EVERY bit of brazing out - no luck there. You will find it extremely difficult to find someone that can weld cast nowdays.

Do a research in the archives for cracked blocks and find out how to do the JB Weld repair - that is the best and easiest way to do it.

Good luck,
Dan

RFD...depending on where the crack is, you might be able to use JB Weld instead of heat welding to close it(save alot of time & $$). Can you post a picture of the crack?

Jeff

For what it's worth, I bought a small pack of welding rods that were labeled "for machinable cast iron" from TSC. They were used on a jeep steering box and it held for years with 36" tires. I allways thought I could use them on a block someday.
