I keep seeing it posted "second gear is the weak gear".
Most of what I do is in second gear.

Am I gonna wear it out or damage it some how.

Probably the most abuse it gets is me grinding the gears sometimes.
I try to keep that to a minimum, but it still happens.

Otherwise I mow mainly in second gear.
I have one hill I come up in second gear
when I am hauling dirt with the rear scoop.

Is my second gear in any danger.

Thanks.

Is this true of the 4-speed in the Jubilee as well? I'm not particularly worried about mine, as I don't brush-hog with it, and probably 90% of the work it does is in 3rd (raking hay and hauling wagons), but curious. Thanks.

FordFarmer..... ....my N-Ford MPC lists p/n: 8N-7101B, gear, sliding 2nd 56 teeth, eff: 8N, NAA (1948-1954). Does that answer yer question?

I personally don't think the 2nd qear is as weak as you think and I think Zane is correct that it is subject to "abuse" from brushhoggin'. But I think the abuse is due to lack of internal ORC. Always use an external PTO mounted ORC (over running coupler) when bushhoggin' ($60, cheap)..... ....Dell

Then, what gear should we use for brushhogging...first?

Plowing or mowing etc in Second gear won't hurt a thing but Bush Hogging in the rough in second gear is asking for it!

Second gear in the four speed transmission is a thin cylinder with a row of teeth sitting on the outer circumference. The OD is about two inches or so and the ID is about 1-1/4 inches so it is thin. It is the weak link in the four speed transmission

Bush Hog hitting a heart pine stump at full RPM will bust that little sucker half in two.

How do I know? I have repaired maybe 40 four speed transmissions over the past 50 or so years and nearly every one of them was a busted second gear while Bush Hogging. That should be suffiecient reason to the wise!

ZaneYou can plow and mow all you want to in second gear but I can tell you for sure that you should avoid bush hogging in the rough stuff in second gear. The reason is that the second gear is a puny little thin in cross section gear. The gear outside diameter is about two inches and the shaft it rides on is about 1-1/4 inches so all you got is a thin piece of steel with a row of teeth sitting on top of it and the shock of that

That makes sense.
The only bush hogging I do in second gear is
in the yard when I let it get to high for the RFM.
Otherwise it is only first gear for the rotary cutter.
Mowing and coming up the hill from the river
is the about the only thing second gear gets used for.

Thanks.

Second Gear in 2N/9N 3-Speed in reply to ZANE, 08-28-2006 13:43:49
Your analysis makes sense. Do you consider this a problem in the 2N/9N 3-Speed transmission.

The three speed is a totally different animal.

I don't think you can break a three speed transmission no matter what you do to it. Tough!
But slow!

Pooh..... ...according to my 8N-Ford Owners manual, Ford recommends second gear for PLOWING, 3.56mph at 1500rpm's; maximum torque is 92ft/lbs at 1500rpm's; maximum drawbar HP, 2nd gear 23.16hp; maximum belt HP = 27.32hp at 2000rpm's. Univ Nebraska test #443..... ...Dell

That is a commonly held belief for a couple reasons. If you were to look inside thae transmission, second gear is visibly smaller than all the others. It's narrower and smaller in diameter. The other reason is that for 50 years, most people have found out what you have. 2nd is a real handy gear for most stuff. Plowing, mowing, pulling, etc. It typically gets the most use and therefore the most abuse. If you keep the gear oil full and clean and don't grossly abuse it, it'll be fine.
