do you have to line bore when you replace the front main housing with a new oil pump?

It would normally be good practice to line-bore the block when a main bearing cap is replaced. The replacement oil pumps have the holes slotted a bit, to allow a little movement for alignment, and there's lots of tractors running around with new oil pumps without a line bore job.

You can check the oil clearance with Plastigage, and decide for yourself if you can "get by without a line bore.

I've been wondering about this. The slotted caps can accomodate lateral adjustments in bore centerline but it won't help with vertical error. The original caps are not keyed into the block and have a fairly loose fit on the bolts which allow them to center a bit laterally as well. In the old days they used to place shim stock under caps to increase bearing clearances but I don't think anybody does that anymore - especially with caps that are keyed into the webs. What's SOP on an N engine if the vertical centerlines are out significantly?
