Took head off, no sign of leak between #2 #3

I posted last week compression readings on my 8N. #2 & #3 were low on the dry reading. Dell said that can indicate a leak between #2 & #3. I pulled the head off and see no sign of a leak. It appears that the gasket had good contact all the way around both those cylinders. What should I do now, slap a new gasket on or tear something else off. I did turn the engine over and saw the valves open and close nicely so valves are not sticking. 1: 100 dry, 155 wet
2: 80, 140
3: 90,115
4: 100, 185
The reason I started all this was because it is missing and hardly enough power to pull itself. I checked spark before I removed head. Spark from my Pertronix is nice and bright on all four. I don't really have the budget or time to do an overhaul now but.....??

Ray..... .oops.....bad guess??? Maybe, I don't know.

As bg suggests, there are other suspects for low power. And while your dry compression readings are not in the "braggin" range, the're marginally acceptable and I've known of lots worse N's working well with 'em.

When you did your "wet" test, how much oil did you squirt in you sparkplug hole, doesn't take a lot, about 2 squirts. The reason I comment is, I've never seen compression that high on N's before (185). New N's compression is about 120.

Well look at it this way, knowing that you have a new headgasket, gotta give you a cheap ease of mind. And no, I really don't think you need an "overhaul" yet..... ...Dell

Ray,

Hope ya find your problem. It's always good to start with the simple fixes and then continue to the hard stuff when trying to find answers to your problems. Hope you didn't have to do all this work for nothing.

Good luck,
Tyman

Dell, is there anything fairly cheap and easy I can do with the valves now that I have the hood off the tractor, the head off the engine, my hands greasy, etc? I'll re check the compression using 2 squirts when I get the head back on. I have new head bolts on order at New Holland. I worked on the carburator not too long ago, put all new wiring on it, Pertronix electronic ignition, cleaned the fuel line and bowl so I think I've covered most everything except valves. It was running great last summer when I moved a pile of dirt left over from my house project.

I sort of recognize this slippery slope I'm on. I started our old house renovation project the same way("let's just put a little addition on over here and a few new windows in there...."). What started out as a 100 year old tired farm house now looks like a new farm house. I completely stripped out most interior or at least resurfaced it, new siding, new roof, new porch, added a front door, on and on. We did manage to keep the feel of the old house though. I can't really go down that path with this 50 year old tractor just yet. Maybe in a few years.

Ray..... ..If'n ya really gotta do sumptin...

You might consider some valve grinding compound and lapping the exhaust valve seats. Intakes never burn.

Ya have to pull the valve stem keepers and take the spring pressure off so you can rotate the valves with a rubber vacuum chuck on the end of a stick. Usually, the only people that do that are hotrodders trying to get the last hp down the track.

Myself, I probably wouldn't..... ...Dell

Check the manifold closely while you have it off.
You may have weak spots or even a crack in between the intakes and exhausts, though I don't think that would explain the compression readings that you are seeing.
It may however explain the skip/sputter which is what you were trying to fix in the first place...

Oops!

That is if you have the manifold off...

Can you see if the valve seats and valve faces are eroded or not? Have you checked the springs for broken or weak springs? If they look OK, I'd put a new gasket on it and try another approach. Missing and lacking power could be a timing problem, governor or even a carb problem. Systematically isolate and diagnose each component.
