Something I thought I would throw out. I run into same symptoms a year ago, but I had replaced the pressure plate. Found out the pressure plate was the right part number, but they had used fingers for a car or pickup which are a little too long and doesn't have enough clearence for the clutch shaft. My help someone else though----- Michael

Two additional questions for you.

1. Someone awhile back had a broken/sheared shaft (p/n 7510) which occurred inside the case bushing. He didn't see it until after scratching his head for many a day also. Is the shaft broke?

2. If you used the intallation method in the FO-4 manual for aligning the clutch splines on assembly. DID YOU REMOVE THE WOODEN WEDGES from the pressure plate release level arms?

Just asking? Jim

There are really only a few possibilities. If the clutch linkage is hooked up like the pictures in the F O 4 manual; if the throwout bearing is the correct one--right length from fork to bearing face; and there is no or very little resistance to the clutch pedal then it about has to be that the pressure plate springs have somehow lost their tension. You did say you reused the old pressure plate. Although there is a proceedure for adjustment of the release fingers it requires a jig and I have always found it easier to just have a clutch shop do it or get a rebuilt pressure plate. I guess it would be possible to get the release fork behind the throw out bearing but that shouldn't cause lack of pedal feel just more pedal travel. It might also be possible to get a clutch disc with dramatically thinner friction surfaces but again that is pretty far beyond the realm of the likely.

Your mileage may vary

Nova..... ..I can't remember 'xactly but the N-clutch plate is an "offset" design where the central splined bush is not centered in the rotational plane of the clutch friction material. I can't remember if'n there is a "this side out" kind of warning. But if'n you put the wrong side out, you could find your clutch pedal not traveling the needed distance to release the clutch pressure plate. You might want to further investigate this possibility..... .Dell

Put a cluch plate in backswards on a 56 plymouth once, never herd the end of it. ( it was my car ). Dont ask. I was a 16 year old kid at the time it taught me to do things right the first time or they will come back to haunt you.

Check the bottom of the page of this link.
Did you check the clutch finger height?
