Should the shaft of the distributor have a little play? Mine can wiggle in and out about 1/16 of an inch. I am wondering if this is why I am getting brass shavings inside the cap. Also the points need to be cleaned after every other use.

there - are 2 bushings that are probably worn. they are press fit and easy to change. The brass filings are probably from the rotor touching 1 or more of the contacts due to your worn bushings. THT
