the oil pressure guage which looks like it could be original, was not moveing,nada. pulled releif valve, plenty oil on it,cleaned it up and primed the hole,sewed it back up, fired her up-no pressure, pecked back of guage with screwdriver handle-a little movement-kept pecking till i had full pressure, 30# hot or cold at idle-35# hot or cold at half throttle. i think this is a pretty good sign of a fairly strong engine. she is runnin fantastic. i would like to thank all who gave me tips and suggestions over the last 3 or 4 weeks. RP

Glad you go it working. If it is original what I would suggest doing is remove the gauge and the oil line that goes from the engine block to the back of the gauge and clean it out really good. I would soak it in solvent/gas or whatever and try and blow some air through it. After many many years it most likely has some crud lodged in it. On my 43 2N the oil pressure starts out at about 30# then once warmed up it will drop down to 15-18#. What worries me is your constant oil pressure hot or cold?

The constant oil pressure, with hot or cold oil is the sign of a healthy set of bearings. The clearance are small and as a result the relief valve is conrolling the pressure when the oil is cold and since the bearing clearances are small, it may also be controlling when the oil is hot, or the clearances are controlling with the relief valve shut. When you have big clearances, the relief valve controls while the oil is cold because the oil viscosity is high and the pumps sees a high resistance to flow. When the oil temperature increases and its viscosity drops, the relief valve no longer comes into play because the bearing clearances are so large, the pump can only supply the oil flow at the reduced pressure. I have a remanufactured engine in my TO-30 and and it holds constant oil pressure independent of oil temperature. The old engine idled at 25 psi cold and at hot idle had less than 15 psi due to worn bearings. My guess is that you have some worn bearings in your engine or your relief valve is sticking open or partially open.
