I have a Kohler model 5RM22 with a K662 engine. The generator will only put out 83 volts. Local expert checked it out and said the armature is shorted out and it is considered junk. New parts are virtualy impossible, but I did locate a used armature in Wi. for $450 plus shipping. Question; is there any way the armature can be repaired and not cost an arm and a leg? Or do you agree the unit is junk. The engine is in excellent condition, good oil pressure (over 70) startes in all kinds of weather. Would appreciate your comments. Thanks in advance. Ron

Ron, if I remember right if you can look at the armature and find the open segment and the wire may be burned off the commutator bar and you can successfully solder it back, your troubles are over. If it is grounded, you need a rewind. No. 1 easy, No. 2 expensive.

Thanks for all the good input. At this time we're exploring the possibility of repairing it inexpensively. An older fellow down in lower WI. said he thinks it can be repaired without a complete rewinding and that he has done many in the last 52 years of working on them. He also has a used armature he said is a match for my unit and is asking $450, which is cheap considering the cost of a good new generator. Hate to consder it junk, but time will tell. I did find out from the Generator Forum that there is a market for my engine, so all will not be lost. Again thanks for all of your input and safe tractoring to y'all. Ron

If you go with the used armature make sure it is identical to the defective one in all aspects or it could cause the generator to produce heat instead of useable power. Jim

I'd think most any electric motor repair shop could rewind the armature. At least with motors that's usually not an inexpensive service. But at $450 you're in the neighborhood.

Have heard of armatures amd fields being rebuilt but I'm sure that is getting to be a specialized art now. Did a quick search under electrical armature rebuilding and came up with hits. Others search words and search engines should come up with more results. also look under electric motor rebuilding. Not sure how much it would cost but would be worth checking into.

Search showed the engine as 15 HP. How about just replacing the whole generator with something like this? More generator than you have engine for but just watch the load or limit load with circuit breakers.

The generator is belt powered. Driving it with your engine with pulleys sized to double the rpm would work.
OR
Build a simple platform for the 3 point and drive the generator with the N pto with a two to one belt arrangement!
Still cheaper than the armature! And you would get to have some fun and drive the tractor to the job!

Sorry people, I used my real name rather than my forum tag. Still hope to see some good advice. Ron
