before she started but wouldn't come up to speed. now she won't start. i checked the plugs. one of them was a little black, but dry. the other 3 were a little worse, and looked wet. how concerned should i be about that? haven't checked the point gap yet as you suggested Dell. thx.

the fact that it would start but not accellerate, and your plugs are black and wet, means you have been putting in more gas than it can burn, which says to me -weak fireing or timming needs advanced after replaceing those plugs with autolite 437, i think low timming has been your main problem, RP

I agree with both Dell and SouNdguy, but add that the lack of being able to come up to speed and then a no start condition may be caused by bad gas. I have had more problems with ethanol gas (10%) than any real gasoline. In a tractor that is used only occasionally, the ethanol draws moisture from the air and makes the gas fire very poorly. Sometimes I have gotten 'er started on ether and then she'll run on the poor gas, but has poor power. ...Just a suggestion of something to consider.

Dry black and possibly fuzzy looking is indicative of a rich mixt.

oily-Wet and black can be oil control rings bad.. or if it is gas wet and black.. I'd say it was also rich.. and you choked it a bit too much.
