How do you determine the depth of the coulter wheel? Do you want it as deep as the plow bottom? Thank you, Philip.

Throw them away! They are a lot more trouble than they are worth and if the ground has a lot of trash on it they will clog up the plow I guarentee you.

Thank you for the input Dell and Zane. Our local club has plow day every fall, and this is the only time I really get out and plow. For the past four years I have been the only Ford out there, but I really enjoy it. I have been using my Dads old Ford 2-14" with no furrow wheel and no coulters, so I feel as though I have always been missing out. I bought this Ford 2-12" trip plow minus one coulter wheel this summer for $100 from an employee here at work. I have spent months for the missing coulter wheel, and finally found it!!! You may be right Zane, but I am excited to try my new 2-12" plow this fall with coulters and furrow wheel in place! The early 1950 8N should really throw dirt now! Philip.

Phillip..... ...principle job of the coulter wheel is to cut the sod roots. Usually 3-inches is sufficent. Most moldboard plows run about 6-in deep. tip: plow fast and NO RUST (high drag/draft)

The 8N-Ford owners manual has excellent instructions on how to set-up a plow (12-pages) $8, cheap. Gittcha one!!!

Ford coulter instructions say: "Rolling coulters are used to cut trash, roots, reduce draft, and to leave a uniform furrow wall. The coulters should be set about 1/2 the plowing depth on average soils. In soils where plow penetration is difficult, it may be necessary to raise the coulters. Coulters should be sharp to lessen draft, leave a uniform furrow wall, and reduce the tendicy to ride the plow out of the ground." ..... ...HTH, Dell
