I have been unable to obtain a “true” Ballast ignition resistor. The Master Catalog of “Standard Motor Products” clearly identifies the RU-11 as Ballast with thermal resistance of .50-60 to 1.75 Ohms. The product is NOT as described (its “Bogus” .55 period) and will damage a vintage coil. The Automotive devices, made in Mexico, are FIXED resistances. The device resistance is stamped on the electrical connector. The vendor’s Napa, Borg Warner, Standard use a “Cross Reference” that is not consistent with each other or to themselves. It is not very helpful to the shade-tree mechanic when vendors are selling “Bogus” Product.

The only Coils that use or need a Ballast type resistor are the “ N-Front Mount” and other vintage coils that require current limited to ~ 3 Amps.

The two (2) N- OEM Ballast resistors that I have are both correct (true) but they are time dated (old). I will obtain a sampling to test when I get back to Arizona next month. I think a vendor in TN was selling just the OEM Ballast for ~ $6.00 and buying in Canada is expensive and may not be a true representative of the Product (third party vendors).

If you want to mess with 12 Volt conversions you need to measure and verify the Ignition resistors.

Could someone have mixed up an RU-10 and an RU-11 between their respective boxes... they LOOK the same, but one is PTC, and the other is not. There's no part # ON the units, right?

BOB, No they were not mixed-up. I spent 1 1/2 hrs going from Vendor to Vendor (Regina.SK) until I reached the "National" Warehouse. The RU-10 is marked correctly 1.8 (ohms) and the RU-11 is marked correctly .55 but its NOT thermal and its also .55 @ 3 amps.

The Standard's RU-4 that I bought in Minot, ND has a bar-code (on box) with "Made in USA" #91769-02253-2. The RU-11 I bought in Canada has the same type of Bar-code (on box) but with "Assembled in Mexico" #91769-02237-2

It is possible that Canada is selling a product that is not "Standard Motor Products".
