After trying to adjust the carb all day to take the backfire away it still backfires from 1/4 throttle all the way to full throttle, not so much at idle. Any suggestions on fixing the problem. 49 8n

Significant backfire is usually caused by timing off, which can be anything from points gap to distributor timing to crank to cam to distributor gearing misindexed to advance weights stuck or interfered with by points hold down screw(s) too long. Since it starts and runs at idle, it can't be way off..... Further, since you didn't mess with carb and did mess with engine, I don't think it's your carb.

Check as Bruce says and also. What happens if you remove the main jet adjustment screw from the carb with the engine running?? If it keeps running when you do that then you have a problem in the carb and it needs to be cleaned out or cleaned better if you have already done so. Some times spraying carb cleaner in that hole will also help

Done any other work on it lately? 6v or 12v? I'd check the firing order; real easy to cross 3 & 4. Order is 1-2-4-3, CCW. 1 should be marked on the cap.

I just rebuilt the motor, did not do anything to the carb. I just read your message and went out to check the wires and they are in the right spot.
This is a 12v system.
