Well fellows I took out the sparkies and checked them they were all white except #1 which was just alittle the color of a fuel fowl but not wet.

sandblasted them all...blew them off with my compressor good ..... .wire brushed them and reinstalled them..... ..reinstalled carb after third time of going through it..... ...adjusted both needles at one full turn out..... ..

It seemed to run ok until except for around idle and then when it warmed up it would run fine for awhile at idle and then want to die..... ..if I pulled the throttle it would stay alive but would sputter from time to time..... ..pulled that plug again that had alittle fuel fowl look to it and it wasn"t wet ..... .....HELP..... ...THANK GOD I HAVE ANOTHER 48 N THAT I CAN USE OF MY FRIENDS WHILE I FIGURE THIS OUT..... ...

Ron..... ..you write..... "adjusted both needles at one full turn out..... ..It seemed to run ok until except for around idle and then when it warmed up it would run fine for awhile at idle and then want to die"

and I answered your last post..... ..what part of "idle-mix adjust is BASSACKWARDS; out for lean and IN for INRICH"..... don't you understand?

It is an "air-bleed" adjustment. IN for less air, therefore richer idle-mix. Simple, eh?

You should always adjust you idle-mix for MAXIMUM idle rpms, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, maximum idle. Understand?

Then re-adjust yer behind the carb idle speed throttle screw for a SLOOOooow 400rpms. (ennythang under 500rpms is probably close'nuff) I do the idle-mix adjust at least 3-times. My idle-mix usually ends up about 3/8-turn. Yours will be different. Understand?"

You CANNOT just blindly set yer carb needles to 1-turn and leave'em. They're adjustable for a reason. Adjust yer carb like I told you.

You write..... ."if I pulled the throttle it would stay alive but would sputter from time to time"..... .that is a WEAK SPARKIE ISSUE, rich mixture is always eazier to ignite. I told you how to do 2-quick sparkie checks. Don't you read or understand instructions? ..... ...respectfully, Dell

"Howsomevers; since you claim yer ruff-runnin' is at all speeds, this is usually a SPARKIE issue. Check yer firing order, 1,2,4,3, CCW. By-pass yer weaksister ignition switch with a jumper clippie. Theses are 2-quick sparkie checks"..... ...

Check your firing order? How in the world would the firing order change mysteriously? Are there 9N gremlins that I don't know about.

and you keep talking about "what don't you understand about backwards threads on the idle mixture screw"?..... ..and I keep telling you that no matter where the screw is ..... ..seated to all the way out there is NO CHANGE.....in the way it runs..... ....what don't you understand about that?

I'm going to buy new plugs to eliminate that possibility of being the problem.

didn't try the propane torch yet..... .....

Ron..... ..you write..... .."Check your firing order? How in the world would the firing order change mysteriously? Are there 9N gremlins that I don't know about"..... ..yep, they're known as nuebie shadetree mechanics.

N-Engines are soooo gooood that they will run on just 2-cylinders. Usually its #3 & #4 that are swapped. Don't argue, its so simple to check 'em.

You write..... ."and you keep talking about "what don't you understand about backwards threads on the idle mixture screw"?..... ..and I keep telling you that no matter where the screw is ..... ..seated to all the way out there is NO CHANGE.....in the way it runs..... ....what don't you understand about that?"..... ..and I keep telling you that you are reporting a "lean" problem (as indicated by your constant need to pull the choke to enrich the mixture) and you keep trying to "lean" the idle-mix by out-screwing the idle-mix needle. And you don't see a dichotomy here?

Pay attention!!! IN for INRICH.

And iff'n you can't INRICH, your idle circuit is STILL CLOGGED..... ..respectfully, Dell

I think I found the problem..... ....I noticed the sparkplug wire off came off the #4 that was looking a tiny bit fuel fouled before that I had cleaned and sandblasted and thought I put it back on but with the tractor running---- vwala it ran the same when I plugged it back on..... .Got some new plugs ordered ..... .let you know how that goes..... ..curious about after the sparkplug renewal if adjustment of the idle mixture screw changes anything.

I did try the propane torch idea before I notice the sparkie off and there was nada difference.

Thanks for the help..... ...I have been using my friends 48 with a after market bucket up front and its a pain ..... .can't wait till I have my baby back..... ..... .
