I have been scooping dirt for the last few days.
I go down to the river, scoop up some dirt,
bring it back up a short steep hill, dump it in the yard.
There's a great big pile of dirt down there that
someone piled up for me with a FEL on their tractor.
I have to back into the pile to scoop.
Sometimes I hit the pile a little too hard.

Day before yesterday I got a scoop full and was
coming up the hill. Just after I topped the hill
and was on more level ground the tractor backfired
REALLY LOUD thru the muffler and the engine died.
I tried to start it back up and it wouldn't start.
I let it set for about 15 minutes, then it started.
My brother was with me and he said he saw a leak
around the exaust manifold. How can I tell for sure.
But it was running again so I kept working.

But it just didn't seem like it was running as well.
Runs like it did when it needed the air filter cleaned.
Plus it misses occasionally. Just doesn't run right.
Really hard to describe. I just know it ain't right.

Yesterday, coming up the hill with a scoop of dirt,
got almost to the top of the hill and it just died.
At least it didn't backfire this time.
I wasn't lugging the engine (much). Just coming
up the hill as normal. I sat there for about 5
minutes and it started back up. Like it was flooded.
Again, it was running so I kept working.
I worked the rest of the day till I got too low on gas.

I'm thinking I should clean the air filter again.
What else should I look at.
How can I tell if the exaust manifold is leaking.
How hard is it to change that gasket and how much.

Early 1949 8N converted to 12 volt.
I have an IT-F04 manual.

I have had the tractor for 2 and half years now
and it has run great all this time. Someone else
standing next to it may say it is still running
great. But to me, something just ain't right.
I want to find it and fix it.

Thanks for all the help ya'll give.

Thanks for all the suggestions in reply to Pooh Bear, 09-19-2006 11:22:32
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Hope to start checking it out tomorrow.
I scooped dirt (forward) today for about 45 minutes.
Ever now an then there is a miss in the engine.
For now I got a lot to check out.
Will let you know what/if I find anything.

When I say I hit the pile pretty hard sometimes,
I mean hard enough to about knock me off the seat backwards.
I got the pile knocked down enough now I can do
all my scooping forward, so no more hard knocks like that.
I was worried I was gonna break something.

Thanks.

Izz it a stumble like you quickly turned the ignition switch off, or a skip like you lost a cylinder. I am still think’in a wire’in problem that you kin eliminate or a problem with the dist. Sumwere. To check for a cross fire of the plug wires spray with water to find broken insulation, also spray the coil, use a hand held spray bottle all you need izz a mist. Wiggle the wire’in harness. Sumin may be loose.

to check exhaust leak, spray around it while running with squirt bottle, of dish washing soap. if you see bubbles of air aruond gasket, you have a exhaust leak. if tractor starts missing, you have a intake leak. RP

PB I hate to make a damm guess but gonna, I am think’in a bad coil, now will it jump a gap of .250-¼” and snap, if not a bad coil. Their has to a miss fire are cross fire to cause a back fire. Even a momentary loss of the ignition would cause raw fuel to load up and when the spark came back it may set it off. You kin temporarily make up a new wiring harness from the battery to the coil to eliminate the possibility of a bad switch or a wire’in problem. One could also wire in a light to the top of the coil to see iffin you lost voltage to the coil. When I wuz scooter trash I always wired the tail lite to the plus of the coil so if I kicked it a few times and had a no start I would check to see iffin the tail lite wuz on. I see were the gov izz kick’in in and maybe a stumble cuzz the carb has a restriction in the idle circuit But I kin not see were it would cause a Back fire. You are gonna have to build a diagnostic approach and start ruling out possibilities , it may be slow but soon you kin nail it down. Most of the replies would be a continuous problem not intermittent, ya got a Hant’ init may need to call Ghosts’ busters

Another off the wall thought - is you exhaust partially plugged? Maybe stuffed with dirt from the backing into pile or bent muffler so it is restricting exhaust. That would also explain the exhaust leak at manifold.

Something else to think about is that with all the slamming around you"re doing (I know - done it myself with the backscoop) you are probably stirring up a lot of dirt and water in your fuel tank (which would normally settle to the bottom of the tank) and could have a partially blocked fuel strainer (check all three).

I had similar symptoms while plowing several years ago, and it took a complete flush of the fuel system to getter running smooth again.

If it stops running after running a while, then restarts after cooling off, good chance it's your ignition switch or coil. Easy thing to jumper your ignition switch next time you run it and see if it continues to run. I jumper mine with paper clip when I start it, havn't had your stated problem in 2 years, but if I do I'll be looking at the coil.

You say sometimes you hit it a little too hard. A couple years ago when i was hitting things a little too hard i cracked a port off of my front mount dist cap causing all sorts of problems. If your front end is hitting some sharp bumps it can come in contact with the cap.

Like souNder sez, you can't hurt anything by cleaning the air filter often & checking for fuel/spark when it stops. Sounds like the points might have slipped. I'd check the point gap. I wouldn't worry about the manifold gasket for now; that is not the problem.

"My brother was with me and he said he saw a leak
around the exaust manifold."

Could be the intake and exhaust manifold is loose and leaking not only exhaust but air into intake making a lean mixture.

Clean that air filter often..

Now.. after fire.. could be lots of things. How do you have the carb main jet setup? HAve you checked timing?

Got good spark? When she dies and won't start.. check spark.. if spark is good.. check fuel thru carb drain.

Hey Pooh Bear,

I'll be really curious to see what the guys have to say ... but you mentioned that you hit the pile pretty hard. Maybe your points moved and need to be adjusted? I seem to recall someone else having a similar problem a while back.

Good luck solving the problem!

pull the aircleaner off and soak it good in a solvent.

if it backfires, it might suggest timing problems
