'49 question

I am looking at a ’49 8n and have a concern. The right front wheel “wobbles” a lot when driving the tractor. I read somewhere that this was a common problem until Ford replaced the steering box with an improved model in late ’49. Is that what is happening here or is it likely some other problem? If it’s the steering box and the box is the “old” model (I don’t have the serial number handy to check), how hard is this to repair? I have not found any parts online for these older steering boxes.

8N ford tractors are not rocket science. I have run 8N's. I have owned 8N's and I have rebuilt 8n's from the elbow to the dark hole in the rear. You have got a wore out spindle bushing that can be up dated to a bearing. If your luck is good you found it in time so that a bushing will cure the problem. If not, a new spindle can still be purchased. In fact most of the parts are still available except the hydraulic pump housing.

Except for the sector shaft bushings it's not a difficult job, and unless the ball nut and shaft ($300) or a sector shaft is bad it's not very expensive either. I replaced the bearings, gaskets and seals on mine last year and after adjustment it works pretty well. New Holland has the parts and I'm sure the sponsors of this board have them too.
Hope this helps.

This is one of those half truths that go around. Although the later 8N steering box is an improvement over the older version. A lot of things can cause your problem including of course, wear in the steering box. If the pitman arm on the right side jiggles when your wheel wobbles then the problem is probably with the steering box. If it is not, then look for worn or loose wheel bearings, worn tie rod ends. Note if the sector gears are all the way forward in their eccentric housings. Usually when people adjust the eccentric housings to obtain tighter mesh, they will adjust the left all the way forward and then they will try to adjust the right sector by moving it forward. Obviously if there is too much play in the gears then the right sector will suffer more because the left was moved all the way forward. You may fare better if you adjusted them for equal play. This may entail moving the left sector back a little. Of course, if with equal play, it is still too much then you need to look at the bushings and or sector gears for wear.
