Radiator question

I flushed out my cooling system last weekend and was going to install a new thermostat because I was fairly certain that the thermostat was missing. I felt the top of the hose and it feels like there is something in there; like the old thermostat maybe got lodged up there (and is stuck open).

My question is: How long is the upper radiator neck in the 8N? Whoever installed the upper radiator hose must have had the hood off the tractor because I will have to remove the hood and bumper to get at the clamp the way it is now positioned. I can do it OK but it is just a pain and time consuming. I dont want to do it if I am only feeling the neck and not the thermostat. So to know the length of the upper neck would help with my diagnosis since I am operating by feel and cant see up the hose very well.

Thanks.

Take the radiator cap off and start the engine. If you see water flowing freely then you do not have a Thermostat or it is stuck open. If it does not flow very much let the tractor run until it gets hot and when the thermostat opens you will see a good movement of the water.

Thanks, but I already established that the t-stat is stuck open or not there. I have flow all the time.

Paul, you are probably feeling your thermostate in the hose where it's suppose to be.In the upper hose with the pointed end facing the radiator. Most will put a plastic tie around the hose thus securring the thermostate in it's correct place.Next to the engine.

I don't think you lose much by ordering a new upper hose & clamps w/ the t-stat, then take a shot at cutting the old hose & clamp off. If you can't get the clamps cut or pulled off, then remove the hood like you planned to do anyway. If it comes off, you can install the upper hose w/ the t-stat w/ the the hood on & turn the clamps correctly for tightening.

Why not avoid potential problems, and take the hood off, and check for sure.

It really doesn't take more than a few minutes.

If you have something overhead to hand a simple light-duty block and tackle from, removing the hood will be a simple one-man job.

Drain the gas tank first.
