I have a love hate relationship with my ford 8n, I am just about ready to trade it towards another tractor. Last week the converted 12 volt system started shorting out on me. I really don't want to spend more money on it. I must say for the most part it been a good tractor, I have kept ten acers mowed with it. Heres my question, is it a rare find being 1951 side distrubtor enough that I can sell it without fixing the wiring problem, and not take a huge loss? It does run good and does not smoke.

If you are electrically challenged, you can buy a whole new 12-v harness right on this site for around 45-bucks. That is a lot less than you will spend on another tractor. Of course the new harness is going to be based on the most common conversion method which may or may not match how your tractor was converted. If you don't have time to figure out exactly what you have, for around 150-bucks, you can buy a whole new conversion kit and start from scratch.

If it runs good an don't smoke, most ever thang else kin be fixed reasonable-even at a tractor shop or a car garage-most any mechanic can fix a 8N.If ya can stay outa the engine innards, transmission innards, differential, an hydraulic pump $1000.00 or less orta do it.
Most any used tractor under $5000.00 or so has a 50/50 chance of havin the same problems that you got now. Folks don't replace trouble free tractors much.
If you want a new un with a warranty brang AT LEAST $10,000.00 to the party.
Now peek at yore check book an you do the math.

As others have said a tractor that doesn't run will bring scrap prices. As far as the wireing theres not much there and cost very little to replace the wireing. You have it switch to 12 volts and from there you have very little to do to replace the wireing on it. You say its shorting out but where, it might just be one wire and if it is just one wire it would only cost you a couple bucks to fix

A tractor that won't run is pretty hard to sell for any reasonable $$$. A whole new wiring harness costs about 12 bucks and can be installed in about an hour. I replaced the entire electrical system in my old Bessie (from the battery to the plugs and everything in between) a few months ago for about a hundred bucks or so. Difference between running and not running to the sale value is more like a thou or so. Your choice.

What do you mean by "shorting out"?

Just about anything that is likely to be happening with the wiring or ignition of charging systems can be fixed WITHOUT a great expense.

Tell is SPECIFICALLY what the problem is you're having, and we'll try to help!

All 51 N's had a side distributor. The side distributor came out in March, 1950 after s/n 263xxx (can't remember the last 3) I wouldn't buy an N that did not run for anything but parts, so if you want to get more than $1k for it, I suggest you fix it. You will get lots of help from folks on this board. Not to get in your business, but even in the highly unlikely event that you spend $500 getting it fixed, what is a new tractor going to cost you?
