I got a 9N air cleaner the other day to replace the T0-20 unit someone had put on my 9. The one I got was from a burned tractor. The metal appears in good shape (except for the missing paint). Does anyone have a picture of the insides of one of these so I can clean paint and restore this thing? I know many have said to use "chore girl" pads for the wire mesh, but "where do it go"? Thanks, and Zane, the check is in the mail cause I gotta have a "Thang"

Generally speaking it is not ever necessary to remove the wire mesh from an N air filter. The action of the oil in the cup being pulled up into the wire mesh and going down when the engine is stopped or idles washes the wire mesh each time time it cycles up and down. When the oil is pulled up into the wire mesh it acts like a flytrap for the dust particles that were too light to be trapped by the centrifugal force that trapped the heavier particles that could not make the turn and were driven into the oil in the cup.
Did you ever think of the pure genious of the oil bath air cleaner??? I think they are one of the more ingenious inventions of the internal combustion engine. Before it was invented the engines were very short lived because of the dirt that was drawn in on all the old dirt roads and out in the hot dry fields.

The old Fordson tractor used a water air filtration system where the air was actually passed through a contailer of water thus removeing the dust. The water had to be changed often or it would turn to nothing but mud and then be impossible to get out of the air filter.

I am in the process of rebuilding a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine that was ruined because someone had installed a dry air filter cartridge that was too short to reach the bottom of the cannister thus allowing all the dust to enter the engine. It ground the rings out until there was not enough compression to start the engine.

Question for you guys with your 8N ail cleaner. How are you able to get the rolls of mesh out? From what I remember on my 9N, there's no way to get it out to clean. I know for a fact on my Dad's 640, there's a spring clamp on the inside tube at the bottom that you take off. This allows you to remove the 2 rolls of mesh at pictured in Ed Gooding's post.

Take care,
Tyman

This I can help you with.Had the same problem with my 2N.At the bottom of your air cleaner you will see a band clamp, remove this and where the cup came off you will see 2 slot's one on each side with a dimpled band of metal.Push these in just enough to clear so you can pull it out, you may have to twist it as you pull it apart.WD-40 or liquid wrench these part's before you start.Inside the cup their will be an oil depth gauge that just sit's in the bottom this, come's right out. Then pull your wire mesh out, mine had 4 roll's in it,unroll it & seperate as much as you can, this will make cleaning easier.Clean with gas, but be sure you have plenty of ventilation, and remember no smoking.Allow to dry roll them back up and put back in canister. In the cup I use the same 30wt I use in my motor. As for painting and prep, take a wooden paint paddle or stir stick, then cut a strip of scotchbrite to wrap over it and staple or tape it so you can get both surfaces when you put the stick inside, then prime,& paint.Hope this help's!If there is anything that is unclear, post it or e-mail me,and I will get back to you asap.Have Fun!Your friend,Jay

There's nothing inside but rolled-up woven or knitted mild steel mesh. It unrolls into wide strips. I found a source for the stuff, and put Don B. onto it, but I don't know if he ever hooked up with them or not.

I'm sorry, I've never had my 8N's air filter apart. I just know that the metal mesh is somehow stuffed/wrapped around the central input tube and that the oil is sucked up the metal mesh as part of the filtration scheme..... ..Dell
