Went to the tractor shelter and adopted a homeless 8N this last weekend. Engine # 8N342271. Casting on the left rear axle reads "L110". Been to a couple of sites looking at the number listings and mine appears to be in an area of conflict as to whether it's a 50 or 51 model. How does one determine the date of manufacture from the "casting codes" on the tractor. Is there additional lists of this information that I haven't found yet?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. This message board has been a wealth of information for me so far, thanks to all for contributing your knowledge and helping out those of us who are new to the subject.

Rick, Serial numbers for 1950 are #245637 -#343592 yours looks like a late 50 and should have side dist. and tach.

Casting code:
L=December
11=11th day of month
0=1950
Thus, L110 = December 11, 1950. That's the date the axle was cast, not necessarily the date the tractor was put together. I guess there's still some doubt, eh. Another place to look for a date is the hydraulic pan next to the drain plug. There is a date stamped there. You'll probably need some degreaser and a rag. The date is stamped in plane english (mm-dd-yy) rather than in code like the axle. Njoy.

All this talk of dates prodded me to change out of my jammies and go outside and kneel to peek under the tarp for numbers.

Interesting: My serial # is for a 50, but E192 reveals at least the one axel was cast in May'52.

I've seen small 1/4" x 2" plates that have some print on them (letters?) that are fastened with screws on various places on the tractor. These are long rusted onto the cast. Any idea what these were for?

There's also a number 8N 4024 under the pto lever on the center housing. ON the transmission housing is 8N 7006 G. Anyone know if these are translatable to dates?
thanks!

Those last two numbers <"8N 4024 under the pto lever on the center housing. ON the transmission housing is 8N 7006 G"> look more like part numbers than dates, but they do not appear in my 1994 reprinted 1952 Master Parts Catalog. These numbers do look like they are in the right place as Part #8N 4021 is the "Housing and Rocker Ass. (rear axel center)" on which the PTO lever is mounted and Part #8N 7005 is the "Case Assy. (transmission)." Maybe the numbers you have were the current numbers at the time of production, but were replaced by 1952 with slightly modified parts that still fit the old tractors. I think this because all the part numbers are more or less sequential and the ones you cite are missing from the sequence.

As for the casting date on the axel (trumpet?), those things do break from time to time and maybe yours is a replacement.

John
