The Good---new pond holds water, new grass holding most of the soil,playing with the N on a beautiful Fall day.

The Bad---quite a few "washout" areas hidden in the grass that need to be back-filled and reseeded before hard frost. I will be scraping high spots off in the upper drainage areas of the pond.

The Ugly---need to buy a new implement--either a dirt scoop or a back blade to do the job.

Advice needed---what implement will be the better of the two for this weekends job--

Thanks---Tim

Just thought I would show how much dirt you can move with a straight blade. Some of the dirt was pulled over 200 feet to get in up on the pile. The blade is a 7 foot Woods.

If the photo does not show up I have added a link to my Yahoo album with four photos in it. And if that does not work here is the main album page;

I bought a 5 ft. box blade and a scoop for less than a roll-over style box blade. I find both of the implements to be very useful. If you cannot buy both, I'd get a 5 ft. box blade. GA Jim

A box blade is like a swiss army knife kind of implement. If the dirt you are moving from hight to low is anywhere near each other.. go for a box blade. now.. if you are having to carry dirt from a stock pile or a distance farther than you want to drag the dirt.. then get a rear scoop.. both have their uses.

Go for a 5 foot ROLL OVER box blade and you will have the best features of both a blade and box blade. You can push a little with the roll over or drag a lot with the box. Look at them close and you will see what I mean.

I can't imagine having a tractor without a rear mounted blade. They're an incredibly useful tool.

Buy the biggest, heaviest one that your tractor can pick up and you won't be disappointed.

Buy a cheap, lightweight blade and you WILL be disappointed.

Not to disagree, because I do use a big-heavy blade for some jobs. But when I just want to grade the driveway or remove snow, the light 5' blade is my first choice. It is a heck of a lot easier to attach and it is easy to adjust so it just grades the gravel or scrapes snow without pulling up the big rocks. For pulling up and re-distributing gravel or dirt, I use the big heavy blade or my grader box. It depends on what I am trying to do. Sometimes the teeth on the grader box just get in the way.

I second the motion for a good quality box blade. I see a lot of discussion where folks praise the dirt scoops but I find them to be such a pain that I never use mine anymore. I found it to be just about as fast and easy to use a shovel and wheelbarrow. My box blade on the other hand is indespensible for just the kind of washouts you are describing. A regular back blade probably is better in the snow but for maintaining driveways and such the box blade is the champ.

i would recomend a good box blade if your just getting 1 new impliment that will allow you to drag some dirt with you , very usefull if your getting those lond wash out trenches, also you will have a small set of rippers on that if you hit a hard area,you can work it too, the box blade works great on gravel driveways too, about the only area it falls short on is snow removal, then a nice back blade works better,
