Dumb question - just acquired a 1949 8N - for the Ignition, is key Vertical On or Off?

2nd Dumb question : loosed bolt by Steering wheel in hope that I could raise the whole cowling of hood to reach those trick parts - won't budge - am I missing something

Thanks for any pointers - seems carburettor is leaking through the choke attachment - is that comon for these golden oldies?

1949 8N tractor undergoing rebuild by non mechanical city slicker - what type of thermostat is this supposed to have - when took off hose, nothing in there - presume it needs one?

Also is there a rebuild kit for the waterpump or do I just need to buy a new one

Thanks - last time I asked for advice I got plenty and quick and right! keep it up and thanks
Norman

Ignition switch could have been replaced several times in 50+ years. I have yet to see two made exactly the same. I just watch the amp gauge and when it jumps off of -0- that means ON.

I discovered that the hood is a lot easier to lift off if you drain the gas first, GRIN.

Key is off when you can take it out.

hmmmm..... I think it depends on whether you have an original or replacement ignition switch. On my 8N, which I think has a replacement ignition switch, left is OFF, and vertical in ON. The best way to tell is to try to start it. If it starts with the key vertical, then that's ON.....lol But don't leave the key in the on position or you'll fry your coil in a very short time.
If there is gas leaking any where then something is definitely wrong.
BTW, you should always turn the fuel shut off knob to OFF when you are done using the tractor. If you don't you risk having gas flow down through the carb and into the engine, which can cause big trouble for your engine. This can happen if your carb's float isn't working right, so it's always a good habit to have to turn it OFF.
Suggestion: Read the archives here and you'll learn LOTS of information about your tractor. Also you should get an Operator's Manual and the 152 page version of the I&T FO-4 manual, which will give you lots of info on how to operate and fix your N.

As for the key, turn Counter-Clock-Wise to turn OFF. Don't miss the two bolts on the bottom of the dog leggs and the gas line.

I replaced my ignition switch with a new one from one of our well known suippliers and was suprised to find that for "On" I had to turn the key vertical and to the LEFT. "Off" is with the key horizontal (???) I called it to there attention and they told me to turn it upside down which did not solve the problem. Now I have one N that I turn the key to the left and one that I turn the key to the right - really confusing!

I was just kidding. If you loosen the locking ring and turn the lug for the key you can have many different positions for "on" and "off".

vertical is off

to remove the hood you have to loosen the 4 bolts at dash where it attaches to hood and the dog leg attachments and the fuel line. Be sure to remove radiator cap also. Takes two people to remove it, or one really big strong dumb one like me.
Carb should not be leaking, have you turned your fuel off at the sediment bowl? you might have a sticking needle valve. might be time for a carb rebuild

Thanks Gregg, much appreciated

For hood removal, just the 4 bolts and then yank it?

Even with Sediment bowl off, still leaking at Carb- presume sediment bowl is the clear glass on LHS!!

You can see how much I know
Thanks
