Gentlemen, here’s the update on my plane. People told me to trash it and cut my losses, others said it was probably alright. It seemed to me that the only way to make a decision was to know what happened for sure. The only way to do that was to have it tested as some suggested. I just got back and unloaded the plane. I brought it to a company called Lawrence Ripak Co., Inc. http://www.ripak.com/contact.html They do all kinds of aerospace testing. They were testing F18 machined bulkheads while we were there. A great company, they took me in right away. The cost was $450.00. They did a conductivity test on the skins and spar to test for temper. We tested every few inches in areas I was worried about. Everything came up unchanged from the factory sample I provided. Now I can clean up and fix up the plane without worrying whether or not it’s ok. Thanks to all for the input and ideas. I have some Pictures before and after the fire.

Wow.. what a shame .. from beautiful plane to 'smoked'

So.. does the hanger owner have good insurance? Time to find out. I'm not a litigous person.. but I would push to be reimbursed and compensated for 100% of the materials cost, testing, and time/labor.

I can still hear Randy Quaid (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) saying, "That there's a R-V."

I can't tell the new Van's airplanes from the older designs. Is it an RV4, an RV6, or just what? It's pretty, whatever model it is.

I've been out of homebuilding for a number of years, and let my EAA membership go after nearly 20 years. Sometimes, though, I still get the itch. Luckily for me, I can just go to work and fly a 747, 777, 757, 767, 737 or the Bus whenever I like (simulators, to be sure, but still enough to scratch that itch to commit aviation now and then).

It's an RV-6. She's got a lycoming 0-360, 180 HP, simple VFR panel. She's light and slippery. No antennas out side. Root fairings, etc. Can't wait to fly it.

Wow Richard,
Just seeing the pictures going from that nice shiney aircraft to the smoked and burnt... Wow made my stomach turn.

Glad to hear she is still stable and hasn't been destroyed by a moped!

James

How are the gauges and the wiring? Fire puts out some pretty toxic and corrosive fumes.

They are all filthy. I won't know what I have till I clean everything up. I'm hoping most of it will clean up ok. I do see a few things that are rusted up though already. I'll replace whatever I have to. The wiring is all ok. I used aircraft wiring. Now I know why, it was untouched by the heat. Even what was outside the fuse. I had some wiring that was going under the wing root fairings. The fairings were not on. The tie raps melted but the wiring is fine.

Richard. I"m glad that you were able to test it and now know that it"s OK. I know that if I didn"t test it I would always wonder myself while I was flying it.

Now the question is, will your IA inspect it and sign off on it?

He told me he would sign it off without even testing it. He didn't think there was any real damage. He was right but I don't know if I could trust his judgement. Even some grumman guys told me they didn't think it was effected, but they said get it tested. One guy was one of the head metal testers at grumman. He told me the exact test they would do and how it should be done. I wanted to take him with me to the test. He was retired and had a bunch of stories. But he thought it was ok also. He was just looking and feeling the metal. An old pro. Thanks for your suggestions Empennage.

That's great news.

When will you be airborne? Don't forget to update us on your progress. I hope she flies strait for you on your first flight!

Have you picked her colors yet?

That's the only colors I paint planes. Check out the first plane, my father and I built.
