I have a 1951 Ford 8n. It seems there's hairline cracks, maybe two, in the outside of the block that leak small amounts of water. I have checked the water in the radiator and there's no oil in it. How can I close these leaks up?

Water is heavier than oil - the main indicator is not oil in your radiator, but rather radiator water in your oil. My 48 8N is at the machine shop now with the same problem. I knew there were repaired cracks on the outside, but my machine shop found 4 more INSIDE the block slowly leaking antifreeze into my oil. Antifreeze will destroy a main/rod bearing in short order even in very small amounts. I suggest you add some type of stop leak to your radiator (your call on the brand or type - there is a lot of debate on this issue), then change your oil just to be on the safe side. I eventually just got another block as mine had 6 cracks found and counting.

If water froze in the block at some point, there is a real good chance there are more cracks than the one(s) you see...

Good luck,
Dan

If you don't mind an ugly fix, JB-Weld can do the trick pretty quickly and cheaply. OTherwise you are talking about more complicated fixes like welding.
