8N Starter Removal question

Need to replace bendix/drive (starter sometimes spins and doesn’t engage). Is it really necessary to remove the block drain petcock to get the starter out/in? My 1949 8N has the original never replaced starter and block drain petcock and I’m afraid that I’ll break the block drain petcock trying to get it off.

This is what I done. At the 2 o'clock postion when you are looking at the Starter hole, I took a small grinding wheel (2 inch?)and carefully egg shaped the opening. Now I'm able to remove and reinstall the starter with absolutely no trouble at all. The starter housing totally covers the hole so that will kinda give you an idea how big I was able to make the hole at the 2 o'clock position. You will be happy you did it. Good Luck

I just pulled and replaced my starter in an 8N. Also, no relief ground in the casting. I left the drain petcock in place but removed my oil filter from the block for the extra clearance. I think it is your choice.

By the way.. bendix replacement is usually for when the engine tries to start, coughs, and kicks out.. or when it will not engage at all.

One that just spins, then engages, may simple need the starter shaft cleaned.. perhaps with brake cleaner or carb cleaner.. it has to be shiny clean.. no lube.. no rust... use light emory or steel wool to remove spot rust.. etc.

The degree of difficulty getting the starter out is affected by whether or not someone has ground a "relief" into the bellhousing for more clearance for the starter drive.

The petcock, being brass, should not be rusted in place, and you should be able to unscrew it without damage, if you're carefull.

Bob - thanks for the reply. Sure no relief has been ground, don't think starter has been removed since tractor built. I'll just dig in and hope my luck holds!

You will lose some coolant by removing the petcock and invariably step in it, track it into the house and upset the applecart. Find yourself a pipe plug or bolt of equal threads to temporarily keep that nasty stuff to a minimum.
