Gentlemen,
I cleaned the fuel system, carb, drained the tank, sediment bowl, tightened manifold gaskets and the engine still runs terrible and backfires terrible.

The exhaust pipe glows cherry red and engine has zero power.

I'm at a loss but haven't done a compression check as I don't have a tester. Could use some more advice.

Thanks,

The exhaust stacks on my inherited 8N glowed red the first time we started it. It did start with about 2 seconds on the starter button after being unused for 10 years. The timing was so far out that the timing marks were not visible on the flywheel. We pulled the distributer, moved one tooth over, and the timing marks started lining up. No glowing stacks... I am brand new to the N-Series. Hope this applies to your 9N.

sounds like fuel mixture to me and like I've said before and I know some of the experts don't agree but this gas we're useing today is terrible and I'll bet any amount its causing 50%or more of our problems today. We used to run all summer and park the tractor come out next spring and go.Now a days you gotta ad stabil or ???and then I hear tune every year ,bull, then the phone on here starts ringing about backfiring etc.Try this you guys take a gallon of this wonderful gas, somesay, set it out for 30-90 days and then smell it .its spoiled just like milk and thats why all the problems its turned to a varnish like substance and gummed up your carb.oh well I've been on the pulpit long enough back to my cave.

Doggie..... ...you write..... "engine still runs terrible and backfires terrible"..... ....this is a "classic case of WEAK SPARKIES".

Since you claim yer dealer replaced yer frontmount ignition coil, I suggest you consider the merits of replacing yer "weaksister" IGNITION SWITCH. $10 (cheap)..... ...Dell

Exhaust too hot? Cherry red? Check timing AND for lean mixture/too much oxygen.

Points, rotor, condenser, cap, coil, new this summer. Dealer did the work and it ran great until a couple of weeks ago. All wires new last year. Carb new last year. Manifold new last year. Gas new this evening after draining tank.

Your points could have slipped. Pull the distributor & check.

The tip off here is the exhaust pipe is running red hot. That usually means 1) you are working the heck out of the engine...but you are not "no power" or 2) you are pumping excessive fuel into the exhaust pipe where it is burning there. I think that your carb is sticky. Too lean, it backfires, too rich, it accumulates excess fuel in the muffler and tail pipe. I got into some of the most god-awful old gas late this summer that just stuck everything in the fuel system of my truck. I solved the problem with a bottle of fuel system heavy duty cleaner. But meanwhile, I nearly tore out the last few hairs on my head, and I'm sure that the horses learned a few new verbal expressions.

Another poster here a couple of weeks ago thought that valves were sticking in a recently redone engine, and finally decided that it was probably also sticky fuel. I don't know how it gets that way, but I am convinced that it is now a reality in the chemical stew that is sold as "gasoline".

Check the timming. Is it backfiring out the carb or exaust.

6v or 12v? You say it's a 9N, is the distributor in the front of the engine? When is the last time you replaced the points, plugs, condenser & rotor? Firing order is 1-2-4-3, CCW. The numbers are on the distributor.; 3 & 4 are easy to cross.
