I just purchased a 8n tractor, and I'm not sure how the hydraulics should work. the large lever on the left rear of the tractor works fine, but the small lever on the rear right needs to be wiggled back and forth till it catches. to get the hydraulics to work I have to have the left lever engaged and the clutch out and in neutral. Is this working correctly?

Sounds like everything is working as it should except that "wiggle" business.

You need to get yourself a set of manuals for your N. Most repairs are not that difficult, especially when you have forums like this one to help you.

That lever on your left engages the pto which drives the hydraulic pump. You should have 2 levers on the right of your seat. The large one in a quadrant is the touch control. The small one(up under the seat)is more of a switch. Up is position control(for most work)& down is draft control(just for plowing).

The large lever near yur right heel is the hydraulic control lever. It raises and lowers your lift.
The little lever under your right butt is the draft/position control lever. Up for position control forward for plowing or other ground engaging implement. The lever near your left heel is the PTO engage. The PTO needs to be turning to operate your hydraulics ( The PTO shaft runs the pump.) For the PTO shaft to turn, your tractor clutch needs to be engaged (not depressed) either in gear or neutral.
