Our local antique tractor club in Johnson County, Indiana (just south of Indianapolis), had its annual plow day last Saturday. I had the lone Ford, my 1950 8N pulling a Ford 2-12 trip plow. I was proud to represent the make. My skills are getting better, but there is still more to learn. This is a nice community event, with it being help close to city. Lots of Internationals, with a few Deere, Case, and AC mixed in. If anyone lives near here, this is a very good club, and suggested you become involved, as they could use a few more Ford tractors. Philip.

Thanks for the nice photos. 50 years ago I plowed 100s of acres with Ford tractors and plows. Your rear wheels are set out a bit wide, as are your fronts. You can plow that way, but everything works better if you have it set up just right. That ground looks tough too, a bit too wet or a bit compacted. It would make anybody's 8N grunt. Your coulters appear to be set about right, perhaps a bit further to the right than I would consider perfect. Zane doesn't like coulters, but in Iowa and Missouri, we never plowed without them. My preference was for 17 or 18-inch notched coulters, but plain ones work fine too. By the way, that is what I consider a really good Ford plow. Mike

Thanks Mike, The fronts and rears are set wide for mowing (6' finish mower) and, I just like the look of the wide stance. I am able to pull the plow over to the right with the sway bar, but then I probably get the angle messed up. I will have to understand Hobos write up and get it straight. The trip plow is unique around here. I will have it right by next year. Philip.

Philip,

Great pictures! I did my student teaching at Franklin under Jim Hixson. Dave Spugeon and I were also at Purdue at the same time. That was a LONG time ago. You have a jewel in Bargersville--Marty Umbarger--what a guy! I grew up on a dairy farm in Martinsville and John T and I were at Purdue at the same time and didn't realize it. Small world! Thanks for sharing!! Steve

Nice pics Philip---rows look pretty good to me--how deep were you cutting with your 12's? What gear were you in and how much throttle? Thanks, Tim (WI)

There were 25 tractors plowing that day, so I never rode in my own furrow, which makes it hard to set up a plow. Some were deep, some were shollow, some were wide, some were narrow. I was plowing about 6" deep. I run full throttle, 2nd gear, but the engine lugs down when the plows go in the ground. No idea what the rpm's were, but I would guess around 1800. Philip.

Thanks Jeff, I had a little trouble keeping her straight, the tractor pulled slightly to the right. As I said, I sill have more to learn. I currently have the outside of my front tire in line with the outside of my rear tire. He said that I should line them up to the inside so that the plow pushes the tire into the furrow wall. I will try that and see if it helps. Philip.

That's a pretty good tip on the tire alignment. I know my fronts are currently aligned to the outside of my rears too. That rear tire needs to drop down into the furrow bottom just like the front, for better traction & better feedback thru the toplink.

Then you need to set the plow up to the left a little, It acts like a boat rudder. I don’t see were the front wheels would make a difference. If set up right you kin 'bout let go Of the steer'in wheel.
