I have two 8Ns. a `48 & a `50. I went to clean the PTO shafts & found that by turning the shaft CCW on the `50; the arms will raise. It doesn't do that on the`48. Any thoughts?

That's the method i use to test N 3pt hyds when I stop and look at one by the roadside. Control lever up, pto disengaged, spin the shaft. if the arms bob up.. hyds are pretty good.

PTO disengaged??? Doesn't the PTO have to be engaged to work the pump? DON TX

Pto disengaged so I don't have to turn the countershaft and all the gears in the tranny by hand. The pto engage / disengage lever couples the pto shaft to the back of the tranny.. the shaft then goes thru the pump. Bottom line.. if the pto shaft turns.. the pump pumps.. Don't matter if it is by hand or by tranny. There is no way to disengage the pto shaft from the pump, except by pulling it.. thus it is always coupled.. thus if the pto spins, the pump pumps.. etc.

Not if you turn the shaft at the rear of the tractor.

Surprisingly, these pumps will pump either way you turn the PTO shaft, as it is a twin-piston pump diven by Scotch yokes... it is NOT direction-sensitive.

The one that DOESN'T lift must be more worn and/or have more leakage in the pump, valves, or cylinder, allowing the small amount of oil you are pumping turning it by hand to leak off, rather than making the lift go up.

both of the PTO's only turn one way, CCW. If I turn them CW, I get a ratcheting sound.

I'm new at tractors. Is the ratcheting sound I hear, what an ORC sounds like?

Like a ratchet. An Over Running Coupler is placed on the end of the PTO shaft. It's a big hunk of iron usually with a grease fitting protruding from each side. If it's there you can't miss it.

A grease fitting on one side & a set screw on the other, perhaps?

I hope so. I hear an ORC is a good thing to have.
Thanx, Sam
