Well, I began to install my .090 sleeves in my 8N today. I cooled them down in freezer, added a coat of Loctite , well the Permatex equivilent, and started with cyl.# 2. It tapped in okay, then cyl.# 3, it went just fine. Then I began with #1. It tapped down pretty good until about one and a half inches left to go. It got real tight but I kept it going with a good bit of force from a sledge hammer. Then with about a half of an inch left to go....a two inch piece of the sleeve breaks off the top. I have been beating on the sleeve for half an hour trying to get it to budge, but no results. It seems it has set in for the winter. I just dont know what to do now. Any good suggestions? The engine is still attached to the tranny as the sleeves and rings was all I needed to do to get it going again. I am at a loss now. Any good info or suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the input guys. I will try to locate someone with a portable welder to run the beads. I have a new sleeve on order so I hope to try to get that all accomplished before too long. I just get to do it in my spare time. But now with Daylight Savings to be ending, it will make it more difficult as I ususally have to work to later in afternoon. But we will "git-r-done". I will post back with results. Thanks again.

Some of the Loctite brand retaining compounds require heating the assembly to facilitate disassembly. Check the data sheet for the particular product you used.

I suspect your problem arose because your assembly rate was too slow. These anaerobic compounds can work pretty fast. The "really good" Loctite branded product (can't recall the product #) will lock up in a matter of 10-20 seconds and requires substantial heating to disassemble. The data sheet cautions that high press rates are required and recommends something like 800F for disassembly IIRC.

HTH and Good Luck,

Realtech..... ...buy new sleeves and use DRY-ICE chips (yellow pages). ($10, cheap)

You were on the "right-track" but unfortunately the resisdual heat of the block will expand the freezered cold sleeve before you gitter set all the way down.

Just make a "spool outta 2-pieces of jig-sawed wood and 12" of readythread rod and 4-nuts. Wood doesn't haffta be very accurate or tight. Just fill the cavity with -100F dry-ice chips and insert the shrunken sleeve. Remove the nuts and spool end and re-use the dry-ice chips for the next sleeve. Simple, eh?

To remove yer castiron sleeve, run 3-beads of arc-weld the lenght of the sleeve to shrink the sleeve. Don't ARC thru the sleeve wall. Cover yer crankshaft bearings with rag. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

I have never replaced a sleeve in anything ever.If you have a sleeve puller it will have a round plate to pull it out.I would fill it with dry ice & try that.
