Guess I need to replace the old 6v starter on my Ford 601 gas tractor. It was converted to 12v many years ago and I have run the 6v starter. Question is what if any advantage would there be to replacing it with a 12V unit?

Buddy at starter/generator shop years ago told me 6 volt starter has larger wiring inside. Which one do you think will last longer? Never had a starter 6 volt go bad using 12volts that I can remember. Did quite a few.

Since the six volt one has lasted so long, you know that they are very robust even when run at 12 volts. I suppose I would let my wallet be the dictator and replace it with which ever one fit the money I had to spend.

I've heard that if you keep the engine tuned up the 6 volt starter will work for a long time. Make sure to have the starter in top shape as well. Dave
