8N won't start when it's warmed up

My 8N has a fairly recent overhaul and has always started well when I first go out. But lately it's got so that if I kill it in the middle of something, when it's good and warm, I'm done until it cools off good. It cranks and won't fire or even try.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Randy C

Check your valve clearance. If the valves are set a little too tight an engine will start cold but after warming up the valves won't quite fully close and you lose compression.
You said previous owner did overhaul- Some people like to set the valves on the tight side to preclude the possibility of valve noise.

Other possibility- Condensers sometimes break down due to heat.Best way to check is to put ohm meter across condenser, should show infinity, then heat condenser with heat gun- Don't get too hot- You will ruin cond- Reading should not change- If reading starts to go down the condenser is leaky- Replace.

6v or 12v, front or side distributor? How long does it run before it cuts off? Or, do you turn it off & then it will not start again? What do you mean by 'overhaul'? Give us the answers to these questions & you will get plenty of help to pin point the problem.

More details:
Side-mount distributor, 6V system, the overhaul was done by previous owner, so I'm not sure what it consisted of - rings and mains at least.

I want to make clear that the tractor runs fine as long as I keep it running. But if I turn it off, or bog it down and kill it, it will not restart.

Thanks for all the replies.

Randy..... .this is classic weak sparkies caused by gunked-up weaksister ignition switch guttz. $10 (cheap) It usually takes about 15-minutes for the ignition switch guttz to heat-up and cause weak sparkies. Usually takes about 1/2hr to cool down and restart. Do I haffta tell ya replace yer weaksister ignition switch?..... .Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I have seen distributors that pts. would open when cold but not when hot! If this is a front mount dist., the coil is subjected to very hot conditions this no open of pts.is usually because the cam that activates the pts.was not lubed. If pts. are OK ck coil.CENTAUR

Sounds like a bad ground problem....check & clean both ends of ground cable....sometimes just twisting the bolt or nut where it fastens to the chassis or block will allow it to complete the circuit...a dirty battery post will do the same thing...cold current will flow but hot the resistance is to great to allow the flow...have run accross this problem many times....of course this only one possibilty...but is a place to start troubleshooting...good luck.

Front mount or side mount dist.? If its front it maybe a coil going bad or a condenser or even the ignition switch. Any one of those could do it but more likely to be a coil getting weak.
