I need help! I have an 8N Ford with B also stamped on engine. It has the side mount distributor so I believe it is a 1952. It was converted to 12 volt negative ground before I purchased it. My problem is when I turn it over the distributor shaft is not turning. I don't have any idea of where to start tearing things apart. Could someone give me some ideas or reccomend a repair manual? I am a DIY trying to get by on my own.

Thanks for your info. I placed an order for the manual you all recomended. I got the tractor in the garage so when the manual gets here I can start the tear down. Have any of you switched from points to electronic ignition on your old Ford's?

Randy..... ...recommend the ubiquitous I&T FO-4 manual, $27 (cheap)

As for yer distributor not turning, lets hope its just yer distributor drive gear pin shearing. Remove distributor to inspect and repair. You'll haffta re-time yer distributor when you re-install.

Your other possible cause of distributor not turning is the bake-lite camshaft timing gear. A little more daunting to replace because you have to "time" the camshaft gear to the crankshaft drive gear. There are "witness marks" on both the gears that haffta "mesh". This is explained in the FO-4 with pictures. Replacement 4-bolt camshaft timing gear is now alumnimum.

CAUTION: there's been a ration of miss-marked camshaft timing gears sold and while the real mark is vaguely visable, the incorrect timing mark is too eazy to see. This is not a "micrometer" type of problem, but a major eazy to see problem iff'n yer looking for it. Hint: miss-timed camshaft gear will give you about 70psi of compression and you will NEVER start yer engine..... ...Dell

Randy,
Manuels are availble through many sources including this site. The distributer has a gear on the bottom that engages a gear on the camshaft that turns the distributer. If you are sure that the distributer is not turning, you have pulled the distributer cap and the rotor is not turning, and the distributer is installed correctly, then pull the distributer and see if the gear and shaft are intact. If that area is OK you are looking at the camshaft. My hope for you is that the distributer is actually turning.

Pull the distributor out and see if the gear is loose on the shaft. It should have a pin through the shaft and the gear to secure it to the shaft. Hopefully this will be the problem. If the gear is not loose then look into the hole where the distributor came out and turn the engine to see if the cam is turning. Or take all the spark plugs out and see if there is any compression on all the cylinders. If the cam is not turning you should get some compression off a couple and none off a couple. If that is the case the camshshaft gear/s have busted. The front of the engine/timing cover must be removed to fix it. Best to take the hood and front axle off first to gain easy access to the front of the engine.

First thing to do would be to pull the distubutor out and make sure it hasn't sheared the pin in the gear, or stripped the teeth off the gear. If thats ok then it has probably has a broken cam gear which means a lot more work to fix. If you haven't already gotten a I-T manual you will need to get one
