Episode I, the Journey Begins: OK, so I just bought this ’49 8n. Runs good. Well, cranks good anyway. Ain’t had a chance to run it much as I just got it today. But I barely looked at the starter button and this baby fired up like putting a match to gasoline. Anyway, first thing I got to “improve” is the front wheels. You see, they wobble. And I mean WOBBLE. Now I don’t know much about tractor fixin but I figure this is a relatively easy problem to tackle first. I shook the front wheels in and out and they each have a good heavy 1/16 of play (that’s 3/32’s to you engineers). This baby has the “old” steering box if that matters. Could all I have to do is tighten the wheel bearings?

I would at least look at the front wheel bearings before just tightening them. They probably need at least regreasing if not replacing. With the wheel off the ground, grab it at the top and at the bottom and observe where the looseness occurs as you move the wheel in and out. This should tell you if the bearings or maybe the spindle are the problem. Then grab the wheel at '9 and 3' position and again observe the where the loosness occurs. This should tell you if your drag link ends are loose and check other linkage points as well as the box itself.
Hope this helps.

If it is the steering box you can put your feet on the arms and push pretty good on both while driving. This should make it straighten up. If that fixes it it would benefit from adjustment/repair of the steering box. I have the later 8N version and the splines are worn. Every year or so I have to re shim the splines with brass shimstock to keep them tight. Actually it's only the right one I think.

The bearings should be tightened. The wobble is probably coming from the steering box and drag links. How much free play is in the steering arms that come out of the box? Are the ball joints at the ends of the drag links badly worn? How about the spindle bushings? If the steering box has not been adjusted, you can tighten it up slightly by removing the 4 bolts on the circular plate on each side of the box and turning the right side clockwise and the left side counterclockwise. If you can't adjust it out, you'll have to rebuild it.
