No, not the much discussed carburator bowl vent, the OTHER kind of vent. This concerns mostly automotive engines. Two things I don't like: #1-them guys that call themselves mechanics but they don't know how to time a distributor back into an engine right so they say "hey, I'll just walk the wires around till I get it to run". If they have enough savvy to figure out which way the shaft turns and which way they need to "walk" the wires, why can't they figure how to put it in right the first time or at least pull it out and re-install it the second time. I know it don't make any difference to the engine but I like my #1 wire to be where it is supposed to be and the advance to point the direction it should point too. #2-Them danged idiots who have the bad habit of using a high voltage test light to check for fire at the top boot on the spark plug wire. It causes high voltage leaks in high humidity especially and could be dangerous if gasoline vapors are present. But far more importantly, it knocks sparks from my a$$ when I reach across there to do something else to that engine like check the oil. well, enough on vents for this week:^)

I seldom post on this board but what you are venting about hits a REAL nerve with me. THERE ARE FEW REAL MECHANICS any more. Most all so called mechanics are nothing more than parts changers and parts men, well if it ain"t in their computer it doesn"t exist.

Gotta say though I am still laughin my a$$ off over Hobo"s tester below..

Well I am a mechanic so I feel I must weigh in here.

I am not a "parts changer".

Having been turning wrenches since I was a boy I have almost a lifetime of experience, and my professional career spans over 35 years. I am an ASE certified Automotive and Truck Master Technician, a certification that a person does not get unless they know their stuff. My automotive related experience covers motorcycles, cars, trucks, all kinds of construction and farm equipment, utility equipment such as digger derricks, cranes and manlifts, portable generators, etc. I also and a certified Mobile Hydraulic Specialist through the Fluid Power Society. I have experience in metal fabrication and welding using oxyacetylene, stick, mig and tig. I worked in an autobody repair shop during my high school years. In the early nineties I was a crew member on a Winston West team, driving the semi, changing front tires during pit stops and helping with any and all work on the racecar and hauler. I have also been road racing a Datsun 240Z since 1989 on the West coast from Canada to Nothern California, and was the regional champion in my class in 1997 and have been runner up many times.

I don't know everything there is to know and never will, and when I make a mistake I will be the first to admit it.

The little black boxes on today's vehicles only serve to help us better diagnose what is wrong with a machine, even though the old timers seem to be afraid if them and the new guys tell you if the computer says everything is O.K. well then it must be so.

I don't mess around, if I can't fix it it ain't broke.

O.K. i'll get off of my soap box now.

You can't go too far for an honest and good mechanic.

A buddy of mine works out of a shop behind his house and he gets repeat customers from all over Washington, Southern British Columbia, and Northern Oregon.

99% of my paid work is done at my 8 to 5 job and I work on an electric utility fleet, so I can't make the same claim as him.

Oh, well maybe when I retire from the utility I will start doing more work at home for others.
