I have a 8n with front mount distributor. The problem is when it was parked about a year and a half ago it ran great and now it wont start. I have checked plugs, points, wires, ect. I am getting good spark to the plugs. I also checked the carb, float is working properly and cant find any blockages. Every once and awhile it will hit but wont start. I didnt have my compression tester with me to check compression but stuck my fingers over the holes to make sure it did have some compression. Any ideas?

Mercurochrome in the cylinder's will free'em up. Had a starting problem with mine after sitting up, found the carb float was either cracked or a hole in it, filling up with gas. It would hit, but not crank. If you have gas dripping out the breather side, then this could be the problem.

Had the same problem....did the same checks....later found that mice had stored pecans in the exhaust pipe. I had really bad compression (8#to 40#) which I guess added to the mouse problem.

I've never tried spraying starter fluid in the spark plug holes. Try removing the breather hose, get the starter turning good, then spray it in the carb. I'd also try pulling it.

I already tried spraying it in the carb and it wouldn't hit that way either. I think I might not have enough compression. When I get back to it this weekend I'm going to take a compression test. Maybe I can find out more then.

6v or 12v? Gas that is a year & a half old will gum up a carb. Spray the carb out w/ carb cleaner, drain the tank, use fresh gas & try starting fluid. By 'good spark' do you mean a bright blue spark that jumps a 3/16" gap?

It is a 12v system. The gas has been drained and fresh put in. The spark is bright blue and plugs are gapped correctly. The only time it will hit is when I give it a small shot of starting fluid down the spark plug holes.

Sounds like the carb is clogged up some from sitting. I would try this. Pull the air cleaner tube off the carb. Then put your hand over the end of the carb. With it OUT OF GEAR turn the engine over with you hand on the carb. Doing that will sometimes clean out the clog and also get it to start up.

I have already tried that and it didnt change anything. I had the carb apart and everything appeared to be clean. What is the compression suppose to be? This weekend Im going to try to take a compression test. Maybe a valve is hung open.

Ant thing over 90psi is good if lower that could also be your problem. One other thing you might try and it will up the compression if the rings are stuck is to put about a 1/4 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder and let it sit for a few hours. Then spin it over with the plugs out to clear the cylinders. Then try to start it. I have found sometimes that works to get one to fire up after it has sat for a long time
