There"s some great mechanics on this board and I"m hoping that one of you can help me find the answer....

My daughter has this easy startng Dodge (3.5 Hemi) that "seems" to shut down momentarily...just for a fraction of a second. Only happens when excellerating..just enough to make driving for her "worrisome". You can take a mechanics stethoscope and hear the injectors shutting down and then starting again when you rev the engine.

Here"s what happened and what has been done so far. It overheated while she was driving. She called her husband and by driving a little and resting a lot, she managed to get it home. Not sure if it ruined the engine.

He replaced the thermostat and that apparently fixed the problem....for about 2weeks...

then...the shuting down stated. He replaced the plugs, wires, coil, and it didn"t help.

They took it to a dealer who said the engine was fine. They checked the codes and found that the "crank and camshaft sensors were intermittent"..The dealer replace those ($300)..that didn"t help. Then they called her and said it needed a new wiring horness...$1000. She didn"t let them do that.

I took it to my brother and his code checker said the same thing.
"Intermittent crank and cam sensors". We have checked for voltage and found that the sensors are only receiving .12 volts where it should receive 8.0. We have tried to check the wires for continuity, but the colors have faded so much that you really can"t tell orange from pink. But the fact that they are receiving .12v tells me that at least, there is continuity.

We"re kinda lost as to where to look next. We are reluctant to replace the wiring horness (big expensive job) or the pcm. I guess I"m hoping one of you has some experience with this engine problem and can direct me to what to do next. I appreciate any help you can give.thanks..Ron

Many Thanks to Fordillac, Stumpalump, diplost and dbnga for the info. I made a copy of your posts and will take them with me tomorrow and check each of them out. If they work, I'll let you know with another post...Ron

Check your grounds any place you can find them.
Crawl under the dash and look to see if a previous owner riged up any stereo stuff and made a mess of any wireing. Not sure where the computer is but find it and make sure a coke wasn't spilled around it or sombody pulled it out to install a chip or some thing. Reset any conections on the computer and check it's ground.
Reseat the connection comming thru the fire wall.
This kind of problem can be hard to find and the dealer wants to repace the wire harness to eliminate any connection problem. Don't ask why but a weird battery on a Chrysler will cause stumbling problems. Swap the battery with yours if it will fit and I bet thats it.

check the wires from the sensors to the pcm. one of them may be broken. Insulation on the outside of the wire may not show the break. when you rev up the motor the torq gives the motor a twist in the motor mounts. this wiggles the wire harness where it goes from the motor to the body. with it idling you should be able to simulate this by wiggling the wires with your hand. when you find the right spot the motor should die.

Had an 89 caravan w/3.0 litre that got to stumbling and dying on takeoff...cleaned throttle body real good and the stumbling/dying went away. Throttle body plate was real sensitive to dirt/gum on it.
