OK Guys----November is Rear Seal and Brake Job replacement month(in between deer hunts of course). I have a 1951 8N ---I have read the archives and the shop manual but would like the opinions of the forum members who have done this job.

I currently hear no "grinding type noises" coming from either rear wheel, and I will replace hubs, seals, brakes. I don't know what the condition of the rear axle bearings are, or what the bearing cup should look like once I get started.

I have 2 questions. First, what should I look for (or be hearing) that will tell me if the bearings/bearing cup should be replaced, and Second, if the bearings are ok, should I have to re-adjust the pre-load on the axle bearings?

I am planning on having all the parts along before I loosen the first lug nut, so I will be able to finish what I start.

As always, appreciative of your responses--Tim (WI)

I plan on this same job in the spring, along with replacing the calcium in the tires and putting on new rear rubber.
John Smith has an excellent step by step on rear seals - you'll want to read that before you begin.

You are right Carl--all of John's Maintenance tips with pics are great to have on hand. I pulled my copies out of the file last night and put it in my "toolbox" for reference----Tim (WI)

Tim - I have to laugh because this was the very first thing I did with my first 8N tractor. A word of advice here - DON'T order parts until you have it all apart unless you plan on just replacing everything as a matter of course (some do). I took mine apart and re-installed it three times before I got the rear oil seals replaced because I kept finding stuff I had to replace as I started taking it apart. LOL My suggestion is spend a few hours taking it completely apart, evaluate all the parts, and order replacement parts as needed.

BTW - if the bearings or cups have any pits on the surface - replace them. If they are smooth and unblemished, they can be reused. Any time you take the rear end apart, it is a good idea to preload the bearings again.

HTH,
Dan

Dan--thanks for the response. This clears up my question about the bearings and pre-load. I will plan on having everything I may need for parts with me just in case. One of the reputable parts vendors is on my travel route and I am able to easily return the unused parts w/o shipping costs. I hope my 8N doesn"t need the new bearings, but I now have an idea what to look for.

When driving (nothing on back), I am starting to notice that when I turn, the front wheels turn but the tractor likes to still go straight until I press real hard on what ever break I need it to turn in that direction, I hear a load pop and it decides to go that way then. This is followed by some more popping sounds. I was affraid my axle splines were about to get eaten up. Could this be the remedy?
