Self-lifting hydraulics

About 12 years ago, the hydraulics on my 1941 9N decided to take matters in their own hands. It seems that when the PTO shift lever is engaged in order to raise the 3 point hitch, the entire hitch assembly will immediately raise on its own. When using my rear scraper blade or bush hog, I have to steer with one hand and hold down the touch control lever with the other. Sure I can use the little keeper on the quadrant, but I shouldn't have to rely on that alone. The hydraulics used to work just fine and would stay wherever I set them. Other than this, the hydraulics easily raise and lower and hold pressure reasonably well.
This past weekend, I finally got sick of having to deal with this and with winter coming, I was determined to fix the problem. I have since yanked the cover assembly, PTO shaft and hydraulic pump assembly out and am in the middle of overhauling everything. So far, I haven't noticed anything abnormal, but I have yet to open up the pump iteslf. Has anyone else ever encountered this self-lifting problem, and if so, what's the reason and/or fix?

Sounds like you need my ZANE THANG position control device. It will fix the problem you are having and you won't have to repair the friction clutch that is probably what is making the lift come up without you moving it.

Rich..... ..sounds like a little linkage adjustment would have solved your problem, instead of tearing your hydraulic system apart looking for what?

The infamous I&T FO-4 manual ($27, cheap) has a section on adjusting the hy-trol lever. Basically the hy-trol lever is friction clutched and rotates in a square block with 4-bolts and 4-slotted bolt-holes that you can't see. And all you need to do is loosen the 4-bolts a bit and slide the square block in its slotts a bit one-way or 'tuther. Simple, eh?..... ....Dell, the non-authority

Gentlemen - friction disk you say? Well, it's certainly there, and isn't in too bad a condition. How could this contribute to the problem? As for manuals, I've had both the shop and service ones for almost 20 years. Yes, I've read about the adjusting features concerning the quadrant, but they seem to only be concerned with where the hydraulics will position everything and never mention anything about the 3 point hitch raising itself.
If the friction disk was missing entirely, what could happen?
On a similar matter, does anyone know what the piston ring gaps are supposed to be for the hydraulic pump? The manual mentions the radial clearance between the OD of the piston and the ID of the cylinder, but nothing about the ring gaps.

Without the friction disc, 2 things can happen.. internal linkage can press on the touch control handle and move it, and / or.. the touch control handle will drop or move from where you put it...
