My 641 was doing the same as you decribe below. The keyway in the vertical kingpin was worn, letting the clamped-on top arm move. I was haying and didn't have time to fix it right so I put a little weld on the sides of the halfmoon (woodruff) key and then ground it to fit snug in the keyway. It worked all summer but need to do it again or fix it right. Thinking of trying the weld again.

If your castle nut appears loose when you hit a bump and acotterpin stops the castlenut from backing out then i suspect a race is getting squeezed inwards in the hub, meaning your hub is shot (wont hold the race)and you need the hub, races, and bearings replaced. not too dificult or $$$

Are you talking about the castle nut on the end of the spindle? Or are you talking about lugnuts?

The castle nut on the spindle should be held in place with a cotter pin. The end of the spindle has a hole for the pin.

Lugnuts shouldn't come loose if they are properly tightened. The correct lugnuts have a taper that snugs down into the tapered holes on the wheel.

I WAS REFERRING TO THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE STEERING ARM TO TOP OF SPINDLE. I GUESS WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS WHAT COULD BE BROKE OE LOOSE THAT WILL ALLOW THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL TO TURN RIGHT OR LEFT WHEN I HIT A CHUG HOLE AND THE SREERING WHEEL HAS NOT MOVED.

Ah, the steering arm on top of the spindle! Yes, that is a keyed shaft. Perhaps you have broken the keyway or the key slot in the spindle shaft has become worn.

RP-409N.....by your handle,I'm assuming you have a 9n.If so, the steering arm that goes to the top of the spindle DOES NOT HAVE A KEY.They are held on by a tapered pin and nut.If that don't hold it in place, the only recourse is to weld the arm to the spindle or replace the spindle with the 2n spindle, which has a key, and replace the steering arm with the 2n steering arm. don b
